We finally got our new grain truck today. A 1967 GMC 5500.
The old one died about 1 month ago. We had it for over 10 years and it was the best $1,000 we ever spent. It was a good truck even if it did take 1 qt of oil to go to the landfill and back. About 10 miles.
The new truck has an 18 foot bed, 4 speed transmission with 2 speed differential. Power steering, radio w/cassette, CB radio and plush bench seating.
As you will see in the pictures the floor needs to be replaced and we need to modifiy the gate to swing open on hinges.
We do remodeling, repair and roofing. A truck like this is great for tear offs. We like to get it as close to house as possible for the 3 layer jobs.
Living without out garbage truck for the last month has been rough because at the end of the day we almost always have old rotten stuff to be thrown away. With a truck like this we just leave it parked at a lot we rent and throw stuff in there until it’s time to go to the landfill.
I’ll post pictures of the old truck and then in the next post I will post pics of the new grain truck.

i didn't know roofers replaced flooring,i thought they just nailed down another layer of 7/16 osb and keep going.
good looking old wheat truck,i had one for years but insurance got so high i sold it,but i sure do miss it sometimes even though i have a dump trailer, the truck would hold a lot of stuff.if a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?

We are considering a small aluminum trailer. Something for small loads of trash, dirt, rock or sand. something that would be easy to roll a wheelbarrow into.

Looks great cargin!

I know you'd love to have one in the city, but nowhere to park it. LOL
Looks like my Yankees have the Red sox right where we want them.
I suppose they are planning a big come back again this year.
I don't really watch the games, just the standings.

I am planning on using PT 2x8 T&G. I am getting approved fastners. But it just occurred to me that I will have to use a isolation membrane between the metal frame and the PT lumber.
Do you suppose that Ice and Water will work?
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Rich
dump still work on it?

Do you have anyone around that can get you borate treated lumber? Wouldnt have to worry about fasteners/ truck being eaten by the wood.
I know they used to say that you couldnt use borate treated lumber in water exposure applications ( borate is water soluable, would leach out of wood). But, supplier by me says the stuff they have can be used outside. I dont know if they are doing something to treat it different or what.
What about using the good old standard oak? Thats what a lot of the trailers and flat beds around here use.Live by the sword, die by the sword....choose your sword wisely.
Rich--nice truck--good ideas, however pt is a no-no in this case. The water picks up chemicals and causes any metal that mosture comes in contact with after running off to rot prematurely. I've seen 1/2" bolts rot out within 2 years. Better to use White Oak on the deck... or Ipe, or Tiger Deck.
Good Luck!

Nice Truck! I've got a mint '72 model, 351, 5/2 speed. They didn't change much in 5 years.
I think I would take it over to a sandblaster and have those crossmembers cleaned up and painted before you put the new deck on it.

Correction needed.
My wife just informed me that my new truck is a 69'.
The old Ford was a 67'.
Just lost my head for a few minutes in the excitment.

Looks a lot like Dad's grain truck. His is a '69 Chevy C60 (I think)Do the heater controls still work? They were broken on mine when I bought it, and I'm pretty sure Dad's are busted too. That's pretty typical of Chevy trucks of that vintage.Does it have the 350 in it? Or is it a big block?
Boss
I'll have to get back to you on all those.
The heater and defrost did not work in the old ford. Bad news in the winter.
I think it is a 350 but I am not sure.

I don't think I can get on the CB radio until I get a Handle.
I've been thinking about Great White or Moby Dick.

I thought a 67' truck was pretty long, but it's really 69' long! That would be hard to drive in the city!
Looks pretty good.
Mark
I'm a little nervous about backing the 69' rig in next to the house.
I might take out a bird feeder or a fence. LOL
Rich
Good thing you didn't get a 99'!

Don't need another truck, do you? I saw this in Craigslist today and remembered this discussion. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/grd/827844776.html It's a '68 Chevy grain truck, looks to be in real nice shape. It's somewhere in Basswood's back yard, judging by the description.

It's like a wife.
Great to have one. But one is enough. LOL
