I’ve got a need for a few framing or mortise chisels, since I find myself doing a little bit of timber framing now. Already bent the neck of one of my marples wiggling it back and forth in a deep mortise.
Anyway, if anyone has any old framing or mortise chisels laying about collecting dust, I’d like to buy a few- 1/2″ to 1 1/2″ is the range I’m looking for. Any condition is alright- I don’t mind rehandling chisels, or doing a little welding to repair sockets, or grinding out big chips. I’m not looking for priceles antiques, these will be working chisels. Ideally beefy old chisels with good steel.
Thanks,
zak

Good call. I actually started making a slick from leaf springs a year or so ago. Unfortunately, when I tried to temper it, it cracked- I didn't quench it evenly enough, I guess.
Right now, I don't have quite enough access to metal working tools to make my own chisels from scratch.
I've got one chisel made from leaf spring- it's a decent chisel, but the leaf spring is a little bit too thin to make a framing/mortise chisel from.zak

I don't know if you could ever schedule it or not... Between your own schedule, and Art's... (Junkhound.) But I'd be willing to bet that if you could schedule a couple days with him, he could show you how to work a larger leaf spring into the right size/thickness, etc, for a mortise chisel of just about any size...

Ahh, that sounds like a fun way to spend a sunday. Unfortunately, my schedule is to be down here in the bay area (california) for about 5 years. I plan on heading home to washington soon after that time is up though, so lets make a raincheck.

Art is the one you'd be making the raincheck with. If he'd even be up to it. I believe he gave away most or all of his blacksmithing stuff.Although, that is something that I would gladly devote a weekend to watching and halfway participating in !=0)

I've got a couple of beefy old framing chisels, the old socket-type framers, that I'd been meaning to put up on eBay. I'll take pictures of them and send along if you're interested.
I'm interested- let me know what size you have and how much you'd like to get for them.zak

Have you tried posting this over at knots?
I haven't posted it at knots, that's a good idea. I may have a lead from a couple different places, if they don't work out, I'll post at knots.zak

If you know how to temper the stuff, I'll make you a deal.
I got some nice tool steel a few years ago and shaped them into chisel blanks, two sets. Nice thick square mortising style. Its got to be oil quenched, and I never "got around" to the rest of my learning experiment.
If you know how to fire them, I'll send you both sets, you keep one of them.

I'm not real sure if I can find a way to heat the stuff up. I've hardened and tempered before, but I think I'd like to do it with a better setup next time. Let me ask around to see what equipment is available to me before you send anything off.
Did you make tang style chisels, or find a way to make sockets? I was never good or patient or set up enough to make myself socket chisels, but I made one or two tang chisels a few years ago.zak

theres probably about 3 inches of metal or so into the handle area. You'd need handles and preferably, hoops.Real trucks dont have sparkplugs
