Got my pole staging system

seeyou | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 9, 2005 03:03am

Just took delivery on my aluminum pole staging system. It’s Werner brand and apparently the only thing made by Werner is the pics. All the rest of the stuff is Alum-a-Pole with Werner labels on it.

Funny thing is, the list price was about 10% less than Alum-a-pole and Werner is giving a 10% rebate. Got it from ABC Supply if any one is interested. Best deal I could find.

ABC supply is big here in Raleigh too.  Do they sell packages containing a whole system, or do you have to piece-part it together?  Did you get the safty stuff to go with it?  I think Mike S. got a net with his company info on it...

      Matt,

It's pick and choose. I already had a bunch of pics that I'll be using for gaurdrail/workbenches. I got the netting, but the lettering was not an option at this point. I could always get the nets lettered if I decide to do some advertising. I'll probably stencil the sides of the pics for theft deterent.

Interestingly enough, although ABC is a big national chain, here it's the small service oriented roofing supply. The local branch is run 3 people that left the large roof supply store ( actually the best employees they had) and got a franchise. I buy most of my shingles from them as well as about half of my copper. They refer me much more than I really want them to, but I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I'm doing some work on my own house, so I'm giving this stuff a trial today. I set up  a two story/24 ' section in about an hour last night (and I had to unpack and read instructions). I'm getting sold on this stuff really fast. I see dumb people.

"and read instructions"You realized that you violated section 3.1 paragraph 3 of part Iv of the bylaws. As punishment you are hearby banned for 60 days or until you have burned the instructions and have forgotten everything that they say." I got the netting, but the lettering was not an option at this point."What you should do is use a sheet of copper and put your name in with piercing. Might be a little hard to fold up, but you can figure that out.

I thought you were buying from that gatorsupply place in LA? Did ABC have a better price, better product, or did you just want to support the locals?

We might be in the market to buy a system soon. Only having 1 24' pic we will most likely go all out (poles, jacks with workbench, extra pic for work bench, net, ect).

ABC was cheaper plus no shipping. I did have to pay sales tax, though.

The sale and rebate go thru the end of April at ABC.I see dumb people.

      what is a pic ?

      1. seeyou | Apr 10, 2005 03:28am | #7

I have no idea of the origin of the term, but it's a long aluminum walkboard.I see dumb people.

        1. MikeSmith | Apr 10, 2005 06:50am | #8

ricky... in this case the pics are usually 20" wide x 24' long...

           or 14" wide x 24' long

they also have 16' pics  and 32' pics

green ... congrats and manny happy uses..

i talked to my sign painter   .. he said he liked Krylon spray paints ( in the cans )..

so .. i  made a  giant stencil.  ( about 6' wide ).... and spray painted my ellipse on.. and the border.. and the blue band across the middle..

then i gave it to him and he did all the lettering

I wuz just up to see it set up..he is being modest, it is the real deal..I can't wait to be on a site with it.

We have been scaffold in so many places this woulda saved time and been safer.

I think I'll burn my old poles..and rent his...

As Greencu said it's a plank. The first person I ever heard refer to "planks" as "pics" was none other than Mike Smith. I think it's a regional term that I had never heard before. Now I'm using it colloquially. I've spent too much time on Breaktime, but I could quit if I really wanted to...

I've always heard 'em called pics in KY. Always wondered about the origin of the term. I thought it was local 'til Mike Smith refered to planks that way. I'll have it done right on schedule...................Mine.

Pics in Delaware also - no idea where the term came from.  However, if you are using a scaffold rated wooden board it's still a plank.  Pic, plank, don't care just so it doesn't break!

        2. Shep | Apr 10, 2005 07:48pm | #12

Here in NJ I've heard 'em called both pics and kicks- I have no idea why about either term.

I've never heard them referred to as "kicks".I would get frustrated when I would start work in a new region and I didn't know the regional terms. When I didn't know what "deadwood" meant in SC it was assumed that since I didn't know the basic terms, obviously the difficult stuff is way over my head.

Well now that you've got a pole system, I guess you won't be needing all that scaffolding.  Should I bring a UHaul down and get it out of your way?   :)

Oh and my ignorant, muddler-butt just calls pics "walkboards".

Should I bring a UHaul down

Yup - to haul cash to buy my scaffold. Seriously, I think I'll keep most of what I have. One size does not fit all.I'll have it done right on schedule...................Mine.

Do you know what weight rating the poles say the can carry?

Would I be nuts to use them for a brick veneer?  It would be much easier to set up than pipe staging, but a collapse wouldn't make my day either.

          2. seeyou | Apr 16, 2005 06:58pm | #24

Do you know what weight rating the poles say the can carry?

I can't find a rating in the paperwork I have, but the pics are 500 lb boards. I've seen 750 lb boards. My guess is the walkboards would fail before the poles from overloading. I'll have it done right on schedule...................Mine.
