I have a granite top on a 24×48″ cab with a 36″ cooktop insert. Well, I snapped the granite right in two at the two thinnest sections. Can I repair this myself with a blade of some sort, or just give up and “try” to get someone out to fix it? I can remove about an inch or two of material and still have no problems with the cooktop, but of course the cutout for the cooktop will also have to be enlarged…getting in over my head?

Richard,
It sounds like you havenh't yet installed the granite slab. If that's the case, it is an easier fix. But even if it has been installed it is still an easy fix.
You familiar with two part epoxy? Mix a small batch, add pigment to match stone, form a small dam out of masking tape at break in stone to keep epoxy in place and not dripping down the edge into the cutout, pore epoxy to bridge crack, enough to be just proud of granite top, let cure. Use pen & ink to further blend epoxy to granite. (If you think you must sand, use wet & dry, 600 grit.)
You do not have to "clean up" the break with a blade. Leave as is. For a real tight joint, slide the two section tight before epoxy fix.
*I would grind the back of the slab at the narrowest parts and epoxy some stainless steel rods 1/4" in place this will make to slab a lot stronger. I use this method every time and it works great.Nick
*Thanks for the info, guys, I'm on my way. What kind of abrasive wheel or blade would work best for grinding the grooves?Richard Day
*Diamonds would be the best, but would be expensive to buy. Renting may be an option. Most diamond blades require water for cooling, which would not be a problem if the top is still not installed.
*You can buy a 4" diamond blade for about $25.oo from HD. the more expensive ones last longer and a lot do not need water cooling. Just ask for a dry blade.Good luck
*b Busted In BiloxiThanks for the help, guys. Been lost in FHB cyberspace for awhile. Rich, can you give me a brand name for the epoxy?
