Grizzley Dust Collectors

| Posted in Tools for Home Building on May 2, 2002 05:06am

Any input on Grizzley Dust collectors?

I’m going to be buying a double bagger dust collector for my shop in the next few weeks.  I will be running a 6″ main line with four blast gates.  I sure would appreciate any info good or bad.

cough, cough

I have the 2 HP.  I consider it a good value.

Are using using the blast gates one at a time, or simultaneously?  If 4 simultaneously, you may need a bigger machine.

Note that the grizzly bags are 30 micron, which is supposed to be too coarse to protect you from fine dust (I have mine in a separate shed).  All the collectors in this price range use these bags.  You can get replacementr finer-filtering bags for more $$.

Thanks for the input, I typically will be only running one machine at a time but am forced to have the bags inside. (I don't want the dust in my equipement storage area)

Did you consider Delta or Jet?  Have you heard if the additional $ are worth it?

I'm guessing (and I know someone WILL correct me if I'm wrong), that in that line of equipment (smallish dust collectors), that they are very similar, if not made in the very same Taiwanese factory. My unit had only about four parts to put on (the casters), so there wasn't too much to it.

I believe you're right.  I was looking at the Jet 6" jointer in a store yesterday; it has the EXACT SAME castings as on my Grizzly 6" jointer.

I have a generic dust collector which was made in Taiwan by the same factory that, at the time, claimed to be making a huge proportion of the components, and often the finished product of the machines from Taiwan. They were even selling components to US and European assemblers. That being said, they had a number of different options (impellers, bags, motor type and country of origin, wiring, etc.). .

I have their smallest model, and it, well, ####. But it #### well. We ditched the bag and just run another hose outside (rural setting). I agree that if you decide to use the bags themselves, you probably want to upgrade those, which is certainly possible. No problems with my unit, however, and it'll remove large amounts of big shavings and dust from 6" jointer, 15" planer.

I've been using the grizzly 1hp for about 8 years and it's always worked well except the bags don't stop all the dust.  I recently finished building a cabinet shop next to my house and moved everything up from the basement. I wanted the new shop to be pretty dust-free so I bought a 5 micron bag set from Penn State Industries. What a difference. The collector moves waaaay more air now and the air seems to be pretty clear. In my opinion, the clamps they sell aren't worth a darn. I sent them back and made my own from strapping. Anyhow, I have 4" pvc pipe under the floor and I can suck all the shavings from a 15" planer with a second gate open. Couldn't do that with the old bags.

I have had the 4 bag model - 2 bags up and 2 down -- may really be a 2 bag. Has worked great -- these are the things I changed and had an issue with -- 1. Put wheels on the base so I could move; 2. changed the straps that keep the bags on and installed some spring loaded straps that are tighter and faster to get off and on; 3. lastly, the fan blade came off on mine -- so when you get yours take the front cover off and retighten the sole bolt that keeps the blower fan blade on.

its a good 220 volt machine -- sould have no problem wtih 2 gates open
