DanH | Posted in Tools for Home Building on October 22, 2006 04:49am

.. right through the wood and out the other side, if you aren’t careful. Awesome!!

(Just tried some today on a project I’m working on.)

. . . . the money right out of your wallet.  I've just taken the first step, to admit that I have an addiction.  I'm not sure if there's anything to do about it though.

Yeah, they're priced per oz rather than per lb. Troy oz I'm thinking.

OK, got to use them a little more, and a couple of minor gripes:

-- The Torx drive doesn't hold screws as tightly as square drive -- screw won't stay on the bit if you shake it even a little.

-- The bare shaft of their all-purpose screws is too short. You don't get parts drawn together unless the top part is fairly thin.

And another minor gripe is having to change bits between 1-3/4" and 2-1/2" screws. Most Phillips and square drive screws in that range work with a single bit.

You just need different size screws is all, you can get the same bit/head /shank size all the way down to about an inch as what you are using on the 2=1/2"

Yeah, the only place in town that carries them just has a limited selection, so that may be part of the issue.

You might check Thomas Tool, for better selection of GRK.

My gripe about most screws.  Would like general purpose screws to have at least 1/3 of the shaft smooth - if not more.

For deck screws, I am happy with the DeckMates from Home Depot. Why should I switch. I found that when using the special DeckMate bit (combination Phillips and square drive), that I almost never "cam out" - which I can't say with either straight Phillips or square drive. I was really surprised when I started using square drive that I had almost as much trouble camming out as with the phillips.

DeckMates snap too often on me.

      Dan,

You should try the ProMax screws from McFeely's. On a 2 7/8" screw, they have a 1 5/8" smooth shaft with approx. 1 1/4" thread. Works great to pull a 2 x tight to another piece of wood.

They come in several different finishes.

Read my mind..I like McFeeleys..but for interior stuff I like Grabbers..I dont know where my lumberyard gets them but theyre pretty good screws too.

I second that, they are now my favorite screw.

I drove one about 3/4 into a piece of wood just to tack something on... and I couldn't back it out again.  I put a fresh battery in my 18v Ryobi (1200lb inch i think it hits) and still couldn't unwind it.  Didn't strip or break, even after beating on it for about 10 minutes.  I finally just cut the piece off, and saw that I had driven it into a knot in the wood.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

    In deed they do.

Last month I went to the fall event at the Woodsmith Store in Des Moines, and the GRK man was there and giving samples away left and right.

Left the store with a bunch of the adjustable jamb screws, concrete screws (which by the way ROCK) and a boat load of misc screws. Torx bits...big ones and small ones with telescoping screw holder. Oh man I was a happy man.

    Now, use'em or bank'em?

at least the customer service does..

one act in town and they know it..... CACHING...

GRK's locator service lists vendors that closed their doors 10 years ago..

Months ago my fastener wholesaler looked into carrying them..

    as in 6 plus months..

He still hasn't heard from GRK's CS, sales or field rep...

even after asking for a hook up on numerous occasions..

He proved to me that their CS people get upset if you ask more than 2 questions..

but they have a great product...

Here a supplier that dropped GRK got so much grief from contractors that they quickly switched back. The only the big box does not stock GRK...all the little guys do. They are just about the only screws we use.

            no faulting the product...

CS leaves a bit to be desired..
