Grout Removal

Zano | Posted in Construction Techniques on January 26, 2009 12:47pm

Did a porcelin tile job. The tile does not have a glaze and is textured. In some places the grout dried into the texture of the tile. We wiped it 8 times and today with a soft brass brush..still some grout remains on the tile. Any suggestion pleae?

Have you tried any of the grout haze removers?

I you can start with some white vinegar and a white scrubbie and/or rough cloth might get in the crevious easier than the bush.

Do the grout haze removers have any effect on acrylic or fiberglass? I have glazed tile with a texture, grout's in the texture, tile is in a shower w/ acrylic base.http://www.tvwsolar.com

I went down to the lobby

To make a small call out.

A pretty dancing girl was there,

      And she began to shout,

"Go on back to see the gypsy.

He can move you from the rear,

      Drive you from your fear,

      Bring you through the mirror.

He did it in Las Vegas,

And he can do it here."

They are an acid base. Don't remember what the acid is.I don't think that it would. Put you can try a dab in a corner.More concerned with the metal on the faucets or the drain..

I've run into this before and the grout haze remover worked for me. Don't remember the brand, was several years ago and whatever the tile store sold me. I used a white plastic scrub brush, which worked well.

Next time you install anything unglazed use a grout release agent before grouting. One customer of mine has grayish, dirty looking porcelain tiles on her bathroom floor. I know it's because whoever did the tile didn't use a release agent, so the dark gray grout stained the tile permanantly.

I tried the Haze Remover and another product from Lowes..they seem to work on thin grout but the heavier portion is impossible. Learned a lesson on unglazed tile. We are going to remove about 30 of the tiles and replace them with pre-sealed ones. Thanks for the input!

Go in with the Muriatic acid. Wipe it on full strength and watch it fizzle.

Observe all warnings and precautions on the label.

    Forget I told you this.

Rinse and rinse some more when you finish.

Some say to nuetralize the acid and wash with baking soda and water or dish soap.

    Thank me when your done.

Eric,Gonna get some extra tiles, grout them, let it dry and then use muriatic acid as you suggested. If this works I won't have to replace about 30 of them and your can roll down your pants, bend over and get a tongue bath on your cheeks ;-)

        BE CAREFUL!!

        It's VERY dangerous stuff!

        Read the labels three times!

          The acid or the cheeks?

I used muriatic acid about 30 years ago..wonder how the Lady of The House will take to it...hope it gets everyone high ;-) I'm hesitant in using it indoors but will try it just to see how it may remove the grout.

If it is latex modified grout you should NOT use muriatic acid.

I went to a tile store and explained the problem and the lady gave me something called "Acid ...". It worked great. The bottle is in my truck and will get the name for you all in a few days (recuperating from hernia surgery). It's not toxic at all and I diluted it very little.

Please do post the name, I'm in need of something. Did it react with metal or plastic?http://www.tvwsolar.com

Betcha a beer it's muriatic acid.

I use the stuff whenever something like this occurs, or when I've got to get efflorescence off brickwork. Outside isn't so bad, but being stuck in a stall shower with it is nasty. Fumes go right thru my 'chemical' mask. Next time I'm gonna borrow a Scott Air Pack from a bud at the Fire Department....

Hey Zano, I've got some muriatic acid left over that you're welcome to have.  I don't think it's expensive stuff, but I have no plans for it and I'd rather not waste it.

I'm in Scotch Plains so if you're in the area, I can leave it outside for you or if you're going to the NJ BT lunchfest, I can bring it then, although you might need it before then.

        1. Zano | Jan 28, 2009 03:29am | #15

When is NJ Fest..been out of touch here lately? Thanks for the offer but kinda hectic these days..I'll get it at Clayton Block on Rt. 1 in Edison.
