Have a straight run of 25′ of 5″ gutter to hang. How far past the fascia board should the gutter be? Also, will be using the screw hangers going into 1″ x wood. Is it necessary to hit rafter tails or ok to space the hangers @ 2’oc screwing into the 1x? Thanks for any help.

You haven't filled out your profile, so we don't know where you are.
If you live where snow/freezing is common, then definitely. Otherwise, it would be a good idea.

If it's 5" gutter, it will hang 5" past the fascia, unless you have a reason to shim it out.
I suppose you could just hang from the fascia without hitting rafter tails if you are down south, but that would be foolish if you get any ice and snow.

Thanks for the response. Gutter has 1 outlet.
Normally the gutter does not extend past the rake edge of the roof. often it is kept back an inch or two.

Here typically it extends past the rake about 1" at either end---- don't think I have EVER seen it kept short of the rake.

It's probably a local peculiarity for different places.Sometimes, I've seen the rake trim brought down past the eave fascia for the purpose of hiding th e end of the gutter, something that comes from some styles of doing wooden gutter in New England.personally I think it looks ugly to extend past the end.

I run them out to meet the shingle over hang No one should regard themselve as "God's gift to man." But rather a mere man whos gifts are from God.
I've never seen it short of the rake either except in the situation where its butted to the rake board as Piffen stated. We used to run it past the rake 1" but a couple of jobs in a row people complained and we had to trim it even with the rake, which is kinda a PITA when the gutters already hung.
Are you talking about past the rake ends with the gutter ??
If that's what he's getting at, I wonder if he is planning no ends or drops, just the open ended chute.I emailed you about that other thing here.

Yes.
I don't have to know any of this because I always hire my gutters out. Money well spent to have a crew install seamless gutters and believe me, they can do a day's work worth of gutters in like 45 minutes. Cheap too. Going rate around here is 1.99 plf.

The quality of gutter guys I employ don't have that problem. Must be a Kentucky thing.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Must be a Kentucky thing.Probably not. It's probably that you haven't been having $1.99/ft gutter installed long enough to see the repercussions of fast sloppy work. And I'm sure some of the jobs they do work fine. But a large part of my gutter business is do-overs of less than 10 y/o jobs either because too few hangers were used, rafter tails were missed, gutter is on top of the drip edge (real common), or the system is just poorly designed. There's a fine line between being incredibly efficient and skipping steps.I found a field miter the other day that was basically a cope. One side had a butt cut jammed against the fascia and the other side was nicely coped to it. Looked great from the ground, just didn't work too well.Edited 8/26/2009 1:01 pm ET by seeyou

Looks like Newpoint is a man of few words.gutters are the bane of my life. For most people, they are done as an after thought, poorly designed and almost never cleaned and maintained. Ice tears them off or damages them. Then the resulting rot provides me lots of work, but not the kind you get rich on or get to brag about.

Do you think you need to hit the tails if you use a 2x fascia?

No - or use a 2x subfascia

The new trend of Azek fascia is somewhat troubling when there is no sub fascia. It won't hold screws well. They tend to melt out as they go in.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Azek shouldn't be used w/o a sub fascia if there's gonna be gutter installed on it. Nor shoud any wood fascia if it's not gonna be screwed. The fascia will come off with the gutter when it gets over loaded if it's been installled with hidden hangers no matter what the material is if it's finish nailed.copper p0rn

I saw some guys doing gutters a while back and they looked pretty good.
