I have to put gutters on the house. However, there is no fascia board of any kind. They simply covered the rafter tails in vinyl flashing (it looks like part of the soffit).
I don’t want to go through the trouble of installing a fascia board if I don’t have to. It is a shingled roof. Please note that the roof was shingled sans a fascia board, so the shingles only extend to the rafter tails. If I add a fascia board I’d have to shingle over it and I don’t know how to do that. In talking with locals I’ve gotten two different sets of advice:
(1) Use hidden hangers and screw the gutters directly into the rafters as the gutters will be more secure that way (and the straps will be hidden so it will look nicer)
(2) Use hanger straps that screw directly onto the roof (using a screw with a rubber gasket and some sealant to protect the shingles and sheathing) as this will result in more secure gutters (even though it’s less esthetically pleasing).
Which method would keep the gutters more secure?

Depends on the details.
how far apart are the rafters, and are the tails vertical, or at right angles to the roof deck?
More support points seems like it would be better, but properly installed gutters will only need to support their own weight, and a bit of water which should freely drain. if there are lots of leaves to deal with, they are going to clog up sooner or later and will need more support. I am not a fan of extra holes in the roof for any reason.
You can also consider gutters made of stronger material, which would perform better with supports spaced further apart.
Several places will ship them to you (google up some sources)
Good point. I doesn't appear from inside that attic that the rafters are vertical. I think they are slanted. There does seem to be like a box that was built around them, but can't tell how thick the wood is. I bought some scaffolding because I have a lot of projects ahead of me. Once that comes this week I can get up there and see more clearly.
Can you post a picture to show what you're up against?
Gutters should be mounted securely, and if they fill up with leaves or snow, they can be quite heavy. I agree with UncleMike42 regarding his dislike for using hangar straps, as it would be easy to have a leak, and they are ugly.
Yes, I bought some scaffolding because I have a lot of projects ahead of me. Once that comes this week I can get up there and see more clearly. And, I will take a picture.Thanks.
