Thanks for the link, CTI. I'll check it out sometime, but the closest is pretty far away.
I'm an active volunteer in the Sacramento affiliate, which has a ReStore at 426 N. 7th St, Sacramento, ph (916) 447-2234. Open on Saturdays. It's a 160,000 foot space (formerly part of a cannery) and it's chock-a-block with really good stuff.
I'm not involved in the day-to-day operation; they call me when they need electrical/phone/LAN work. Getting in there occassionally, I'm amazed at the variety and quality of materials available. Manufacturers, distributors, retailers, contractors, and homeowners donate a lot of brand new materials. Like a whole truckload of vinyl-clad double pane windows ("last years models"); a whole house of brand new carpet (new house, homeowner didn't like the color); entire kitchen of high end cabinets (HO didn't like the look). Also lots of building materials too (adhesives, insulation, caulks, paint, sinks, fixtures, etc). There are a lot of major appliances of recent vintage (LT 5 years old). A big selection of doors and hardware.
The stock varies from week to week. The prices are generally two bits to a dime on the dollar of new at retail.
All I can say is, check out the closest ReStore. Then let us know what you find.

Thanks for the review. I am going to explore a store near me.
I have been to the restore in Atlanta, GA. The selection is pretty varied. If you are the type of person who enjoys finding a good bargain and rooting around in lots of random stuff, you will love it. I love the store and have found many cool things. I have bought basic homeowner type stuff there for great prices. The hours are odd however, so find out what days and hours they are open. They will likely have one of a type, or fifteen of that item. You certainly can find fantastic deals however.
If you are the type of person who prefers a more service oriented place, this is not for you. This store would drive my DH crazy. I think he would prefer to spend more on something than take the gamble that the restore would have it. Also, if you are short on time, this is not for you either.
If you are interested in working there, you can get even more of a discount. Since it is all volunteer, you don't have to put in many hours a month to qualify. (That's what I was told at the GA store.)
Thanks for that informative report! It sounds like my kind of place, and a great reason to volunteer.
I try to stop by the local Restore at least once a month. It is kinda like a treasure hunt. Most of the tiime, I do not find anything, but every once in a while, I leave there with a real gem.
