So far I haven't been able to blow up my Bosch. You might ask the owner of the deceased Makita what he wants -- the same model Makita, equivalent Bosch, cash, etc.

Had a Hilti break down once. Didn't have time to wait for it to be fixed so I bought a Bosch Bulldog. Never did get the Hilti fixed. Love my Bosch!

Still loving my Bosch Bulldog! Got the version with the "chipping only" mode....well worth it!
SDS bits......but I rigged up a regular chuck with the SDS adapter. Brought it to the floor job I'm on now...glue down on concrete......just to tapcon down some 2x's to puch against while laying the floor......but as luck would have it....found a previously missed high spot......no problem....chucked in the 1" wide chisel bit and chewed thet hump flat in no time.
Check tool crib/amazon for reconditioned.....got mine for under $200...and now it's even $10 cheaper. Jeff

Do not try this at home!

I'll go with Mr T. Of course my Brother worked for J Walter. They are the import company here in Canada. I guess you could say it is favoritism
Thanks guys...3 votes-Bosch 2 votes-Metabo

Hi Newf.
I promis I won't bite!
I got out my Tenaquip inc catalog and found a Makita 1/2" small for $157. Allthough as you said, Just a regular drill with a hammer ability.
They carry just about all the brands. their web site is http://www.tenaquip.com and the tel.# 1-800-661-2400. Try the web site and see if at least you are getting a good deal from your supplier. I have no idea what the delivery charge would be to the "rock". It seems the closest location is here in Montreal.
Anyways, good luck and I hope your partner forgives you. (probably will if you up grade)
Thanks WEW...will check it out!

I would agree....but mine ain't completely "paid off" till I'm done helping my Dad! Till then....it's half his. My negotiated pay for aprox 3+ months of fairly regular weekend work.....was half the cost.....$100....of the hammer drill we'd need to do his job!
Plus dinner out on the days when we both have the energy left to shower!
Should be done in about 3 or 4 weeks........so far...I'm thinking I got a pretty sweet deal! Cath's doing real well.....she just shows up at quiting time looking hungry!

Sounds like the Bosch is a favorite out there. I wouldn't know....still using my Hilti.
Mine came with detachable chucks...one for splined bits, and a jacobs style chuck for regular bits. Takes 2 seconds to switch chucks...no kidding! Pull up on a spring loaded device and the chuck pops off the drill's body. Pick up the other chuck, pull on it's retention spring, and push chuck back onto body. "Pop, pop"; that's it.
I favor the splined bits... a half turn on the chuck and insert bit, a half turn back locks it.
My Hilti is a TE5...never used any bits larger than 1 inch dia but these and everything smaller works great. Cost was $225 brand new ( about 7 years ago)

I`ve heard nothing but raves about the Bosch, but `till my Hilti dies (if it ever dies!) I guess I wont know for sure.J. D. Reynolds

"DO IT RIGHT, DO IT ONCE"
are the metabo hamme drills that much better than the bosch bulldog and why? I'm in the market and gathering data.Half of good living is staying out of bad situations.
Hilti drill bits are specific on type, right? Metabo uses common drill bits. So my question is are the bits for Hilti easily available? And yes, once you get beyond a certain size diameter than theHilti should be better
Love my Bosch Bulldog. If Metabo uses standard bits, what kind of chuck do they have? That hammering action wouldn't work with a standard chuck and a round bit? Do they have their own astronomically expensive bits to go with the drill?

most of the hilti rotohammers take sds bits
if you get up into the bigger bits you should use theirs but there are aftermarket bits available commonly.
I burned out the brushes on two of those while building my house, and I didn't even use them much. Home Depot's return policy was a little looser then, to when I brought back the second one I got a full credit and paid extra for a Bosh. I haven't used the Bosh much, but it seems more solid. The only problem is the bayonet chuck, which actually works real well because the bit never slips, but most of my big bits only fit in a jacobs chuck.
