Yo, Just wondering if there is a rule of thumb for length of maximum length of handrail between newel posts(not guard rail) I have just under 13 feet of plowed cherry handrail with 1 inch and 1/4 balusters going into plowed base on capped kneewall. This is in between 2 bomber/solid newel posts. Do I need a middle post to make it solid or is this normal?? thanks

To me it is unusual to have a hand rail that uses balustrades and not have it be a guard rail.
Just where is this located on the stair system?
Just curious .
It is the main handrail on the stairs ,going in a straight run from one floor to another.
I have seen pics of stairs with no middle post and same length of run on the handrail.
Is this normal? thanks
OK. Yes it can be done in one long run . The rule though is still that it must be able to resist the lateral force the code calls for. I would call what you have described as a Guard Rail however because it must resist that lateral force. To me a hand rail is on the inside walls of a stairway .
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
I stand corrected-Ontario code is 14'-1" for this depending on the size of the rail. You can get by without a center post as long as it passes your local code.Missed that last night...silver
Hey,
Ontario code is 10'10". YMMV-check your local code. If no code, it could work but it would work better with a middle post under the center-like a very large baluster.

you can generally run one floor, post to post with nothing in the middle.
but, as said before, must be able to resist the appropriate lateral load.
