What do you do when you hang a pre hung 4 1/2″ door in a wall with 3 5/8″ metal studs and drywall both sides? The wall ends up being wider than the door and is a pain in the ass to case. Also what do you use for backing in the studs?

AC, normally when hanging a wood jambed door in a mtl stud opening, the opening is lined w/ 2x4's fastened from the back, through the metal stud. The original mtl opening is 3" bigger in width and 1-1/2" in height. If no wood in the opening you might be able to use trimhead screws to fasten the jamb to the mtl.
Flush up the one side of the jamb to the drywall (usually hinge side) and extend the jamb on the other side of the wall, or buy a 4-7/8's jamb.
