I’m looking for the best way to mount a mantle shelf over our gas fireplace insert. Instead of getting a large solid block of wood I’m making a veneer plywood sandwich with solid wraparound. It will be two pieces of 3/4 inch plywood 9 inches by 48 inches, wrapped with an oak 1×3. I’ll be putting spacers between the plywood to make it seem 3 (2.5) inches thick.
The question is how best to mount it to the wall. If possible we’d like no angle brackets to show. Absent that however, would metal angle brackets covered by wood trim work? My only hesitation is that to be symmetrical the brackets wouldn’t be able to go into studs, they’d be into hollow wall anchors. Would this hold? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I wish the builder had had a little more forethought on this matter. Oh well. Thanks.
