Hey Folks,
Well after quite a few years, I’ve decided to get off the train. I’m closing my business and looking to pursue other options. Just couldn’t seem to get it to work the way I wanted it.
Not trying to bring anyone down here or be depressing, just thought you guys might want to know how thankful I am for the past year and a half of advice and inspiration you’ve given.
I’ll still hang out here mostly in the tech folder and lurk a bunch so I won’t be a stranger. Just won’t be given any business advice if ya know what I mean??? 😉
Thanks guys and wish you all the best.

The very best to you Mike, regardless of the new venture. Scary at first, but then again, a new journey might be in order and end up good.
Hey Mike......about a year ago...I was feeling the same.....had work....just not what I wanted to do......then, as you know, the excuse came in the form of a baby...and I took a job as an employee.
You probably also know...I was recently laid off.....and am currently deciding between finding another employer...or sticking it out on my own. So far.....with a few breaks....looks like I may be able to stay sefl employeed....and still do the work I was hoping to do in the first place.
I'd recommend finding a good company that does the kind of work you were looking to do. I took my time.....I interviewed as much as they did......went thru about 15 "interviews"...and more "phone interviews"...then picked a place. That didn't work out.....different from the inside...and I quickly left and found another.
I'm glad I did. Honed the finish carp skills I had....got to do alot more high end and finish grade stuff.....even learned to work with new products. Most of all....I networked. That's how I'm keeping busy now. People that wouldn't have given me the time of day before have seen my work and they refer me. I even got a little more confidence....if that's possible!
I watched and learned from my coworkers.....and saw a different way of doing business. I took the job to learn....and I did.
I'd strongly recommend the same to anyone that feels stagnant. I'm still not in the mindset to push myself 100% as self employment requires......being an employee meant taking the nites off......show up on time....leave and do it tomorrow. Not a bad life at all........especially if you go into it as an education....knowing that some day......you'll be back to doing most everything your own way.
Thru circumstances....I'm back sooner that I'd have hoped......but I already the better for it. Give it some thought.....just pick that right company.
My portfolio got a hell of alot fancier looking! People get one look at some of the work I've done with the company...and I present it as such.....and they know I'm not the lowest bidder! Luck, Jeff

I'm with Bobl - No reason you should stop posting. You're still a part of this community.
You said you wouldn't be posting in the business folder - Yet maybe that's where your insights are needed most. Don't recall the exact saying, but:
"Most judgement comes from experience. Most experience comes from bad judgement"
That doesn't sound right - Anybody have the correct version ???
Good judgement come from experience. And where does experience come from? Experience comes from bad judgement.

Mike,
I'm kinda shocked. The pics of your home are beautiful. Are you going to live there? Was that a business project, spec? What are you going to do now?
Mike, the absolute best to you. Tough times force us to make tough decisions. Here is a hope and a prayer that the best times are ahead! Please keep us posted, you are one of the gang and we give a damn what happens.

Mike, I'd say sorry but then that would be like saying that this was a bad thing that you were doing. do what your heart tells you and you won't have any regrets.
Best of luck in whatever you do friend.

Nothing is impossible...It just hasn't been done yet.
All the best, Mike .......... a thanks to you and all who share their trials and tribulations .................. helps me hang in there.
Hey guys,
Thanks for all your kind words and support. To answer a few of the basics...I have no idea what I'm going to do now. Kind of scary... I'm looking at trying to get a teaching job at a local high school possibly in a Tech Ed position. Thats kind of up in the air right now but keeping my fingers crossed.
I've sent out a ton of resumes for various positions but nothing yet. Hopefully by the time I finish the house in the next few weeks, I'll have something lined up?!
Once again, thanks for the wishes.
Mike
Best of luck to you. "A real job" is something I've thought of many times. Maybe those 3 houses will pop up when you're not expecting them? Joe H
Mike - Obviously, best of luck in whatever you choose. However you can sleep well knowing that many successful business owners have had a couple initial efforts turn out less than well. There is nothing saying that you can't start again in 5, 10, 15 years etc.
Teaching may be fun, easier hours, steady pay, good benefits and tons of stories to share with us all here.
Good Luck.

Know a little about alot and alot about little.
Maybe a little change of pace is what you need Mike. Once you get out there and start working for some one else you might find you miss what you were doing and you'll figure out where you went wrong. It's not like you can't start over again after awhile. If anyone asks, you went on sabbatical.
Thanks guys. All good comments indeed. I still don't know anything about the 3 home possibility. I had hoped something would develop with it but apparently the folks purchased the property and now are saving $$$ until the begin anything. Can't blame them as housebuilding is not for the financial faint at heart.
Still waiting on the teaching position as well. Might not know until this summer so will probably have to find something before that???
Still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. This whole life decision and career thing seemed a helluva lot easier when I just wanted to be a F16 pilot back in my early high school days. After the darned recruiter crushed my dreams by informing me pilots cannot be over 6'5", it all went down the drain from there. Been lost ever since.
