I’ve built a new detached garage with a 10′ ceiling and am thinking about building some wood storage about 4′ to 6′ deep, suspended from the trusses and attached to the wall along the long walls (the wall that the trusses rest on the plate, not the gable end). The truss mfr loaded the trusses at 150lb per sq foot in his design program and said it would be ok. I’m wondering about some of your thoughts and experiences. Would you attach the hanger to both the bottom chord and exteded to the rafter or what type of construction would you use? (I would like to leave the majority of the garage center 10′ ceiling height clear.)
Thanks for your thoughts,
Tom

Tom,
I have found that truss design is one of the greatest engineering chanllenges. I would outline your project to your truss supplier, and gets his/her approval. Should you not be able to get this in writing, I would construct this with support from elsewhere. Should you need lateral bracing, the trusses could probably be relied upon for help.

Sounds a little fishy to me. 150# per square foot ? That's one heck of a load !!! I don't think I've ever loaded a roof truss with that much loading. I suspect you misunderstood them.
I'd ask the truss manufacturer for a bit more guidance. Does the load need to be attached to a panel point ? Or can you hang it anywhere ? Are they talking about a single 150# load on each truss ?
You're better off talking to them about this than us, since they're familiar with the trusses they built.

Thanks for the input fellas! I will follow-up on those questions.
