I want to hang a wood storm door on Azek casing.
Is the Azek stong enough to hold the 3 hinges? Should I use 4?
Are regular wood screws sufficient?
Thanks, Bill

Never tried it but............
I might consider it like MDF cabinet doors-use small plastic inserts (sized to your screws). Those blue drywall anchors would work-might have to cut off the lip after you get it set-with a sharp chisel.
Then again, screws meant for azek (usually going into wood backer) - the ones that have all sorts of thread combo's seem to work fastening pcs.
But the wt. hanging off just might strip out a normal shallow thread hinge screw.
Please let us know how you end up doing it and how it works out.
You have a glass panel that's going in that screen?
Maybe....
use the longest screws you can and be absolutely sure not to overthghten. I'd think something more like sheet metal screws rather than wood screws? The thing that interests me is that I have built many houses using doors with azek style casings but never thought about mounting a storm door. Also you may want to put 1 or 2 16p gal finish nails through the face of the casing into the sheathing & framing near each hinge location.
Thanks, I think I might try four hinges, pilot holes and maybe two inch screws. If it doesn't hold I guess I can just face mount decorative hinges and drive long screws through the Azek into the jamb. It's a Combination door, http://www.combinationdoor.com
I hung an aluminum storm door with a piano hinge on Azek on another house and it's holding well. I'm just parinoid because, you know, it's not wood so, what's it gonna do? You hit it with a hammer and it doesn't dent, it chips. I'm thinking if a screw pulls out it's gonna bring a bing chunk of Azek with it.
I did an exterior screen door about three years ago but I was concerned about the screws pulling out of the Azek so instead of using three hinges, I got a full length stainless piano hinge. My theory is that the force is spread over the whole length of the casing rather than only at three small points. I haven't had a bit of trouble thus far but as was said earlier don't overtighten the screws.
I wouldn't hang a storm door on a wood casing, unless the hinge screws went through to the framing.
Dan, come on
" I wouldn't hang a storm door on a wood casing, unless the hinge screws went through to the framing."
Why make things more than most likely required? If the casing is fastened properly to the frame-why the overkill?
When is casing ever fastened adequately to take a dynamic load?
"When is casing ever fastened adequately......"
Whenever it is used to hang a screen door whether wood or metal Dan.
So what do you use on the other end of the hinge, a 37" throughbolt? The point being, you want to hang the door, you figure your needs, you execute. If the casisng needs better fastening-you do it. To use hinge screws to hold the casing on is a bit overboard.
Joes answer is the safest and if his call is answered by someone who knows the answer-all the better.
When ever I did the work
it is
I would call an Azek rep first and ask them. Since noone here has done it et, it's not worth experimenting and have it fail. This Azek expands and contracts. This could make the door do the dame thing and not work right.
