Visiting the in-laws last week, out walking the dog, and finally! The digital camera was in my pocket.
I have admired the roof on this place for years. Whaddya call it, exactly? I recall a recent thread about this, and I may have even looked it up then, but I have forgotten. A senior moment, perhaps.
How long does a roof treatment like this last? What could be the cost of re-roofing?

A zoom shows some detail. How do you prep underneath for the shape to flow organically (valleys, etc.) like this?

much of the organic look comes from layers of shingles, 3,4,or 5. i have seen places like this close up.
my father was inspired by a roof like this in a finehomebuilding article 25 years ago. he sided his house with "free form shingles". they aren't any where near as textured as the roof in your pics, but looks pretty cool none the less. he even built the profile of a christmas tree into the side of it. lots of hours. each shingle is cut custom.
very cool pics.
Every day is a gift, that's why it's called the present.
That's really unique. I'd guess that's at least a $50 to 75 K roof, maybe more with all the detailing and extra flashing that would be required.
Gene, there was an article in FHB 10 years ago or so about how to do this.
Takes zillions of cedar shingles, I too have some pics I took in (I think) Redlands CA of a house with this style roof.
Big bucks for sure.

If I recall, that article called the technique "shinge thatch", and had a sidebar maybe about how the hip/valley/rafter tail framing details worked.
seems to me they were steam-bending the shingles, to give it that "thatched" lookView Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product†– Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com
You mentioned being in Chicago... there is at least one in Piedmont, CA that's just like that. The first time I drove past I was stunned, had to stop and stare over their fence.
There was a discussion last year about that style of roof:
