I’m installing hard wired flourescent under cabinet fixtures in a remodeled kitchen. The light locations already have NM cable hanging out of the back of the wall cabinets.
My instinct is to protect the NM cable with BX or conduit, but I wonder if being under the cabinet and behind the fixture is generally considered a protected location, and I could therefore mount the cable to the cab bottom and be done with it
The under cab fixtures come with NM cable clamps, for their 3/8 knockout. Because they are low-profie lamps normal 1/2 knockout don’t exist. The 3/8 knockouts, preventing using normal BX clamps. the fixtures are on 12 ga, so if I go BX or conduit, I reckon 1/2 in will be required.
Suggestions?

That's the way my electrician wires them.
