How about this?
I was asked to install 3/4″ thick, 3.25″ wide pre-finished tounge & groove oak floor over carpet. Before you answer, the carpet is on solid 3/4″ plywood and has no padding. Also, the carpet is (relatively) thin. It appears to be comercial grade carpet with no wear spots.
Carpet is 100% glued down and around 10 yrs old. He is really concerned about ripping the carpet up because of dust. Really against ripping carpet up.
I have concerns for installing wood floor over carpet but lets hear if anyone thinks/knows it will work.
Cheers – and thanks!

There will be enough resilience in the carpet that the boards can move up and down on the nails and squeak.<br>
I'd only consider a floating installation or a 3/4" plywood overlay

Sounds like a bad idea. I don't see any benefit, except that the HO takes the cheap way out. I would expect a lot of call-backs and complaints about squeeks, uneven joints, and a generally crappy job.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
just wait until you start the job....
what do you mean you have to cut the boards to fit at the ends ?
that's going to make a lot of dust.
you had better make all of the cuts at your shop.

Any concern about moisture buildup?

Carefully read the installation instructions for the flooring. If necessary, get a written opinion from the manufacturer. When you find out (and I'm sure you will) that this installation will void any warranty, show the customer and proceed from there. If he still insists, give him the tail light guarantee - or just walk away from this one.
You offer a good idea about wood flooring over the carpet. Thanks a lot
