Hey guys, I would like a little advice about installing Hardi-shingles over old siding. Here’s what’s happening. I am adding a one story living room & study (18’x32′) addition against the east side of my 1-1/2 story home. The existing outside wall is 2×4 with 1/2″ Rmax board, Barricade and triple lap hardboard. I would like to apply Hardi shingles on all of the remaining old wall after the addition is completed. Should I strip all of the old hardboard off before applying the Hardi or could I just apply the new Hardi directly over the old siding?

It doesn't look like you would have much to remove. It will give you a chance to check out flashings and prevent any thickness issues at doors and window trim. What's demo-ing a little siding compared to a brick chimney?
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Half a day's work will have that all off and the time you save installing the new will be about equal to that because it is so much easier to install over sheathing than over old junk.
So net amount of time is zero to take it off and you will certainly end up with better detailing at windows and have a better job. For my two cents - take it off - take it all off!

I'd agree with hammer and Piffin. You'll have a easier time installing the hardi over sheeting and it will give you the chance to find any problems that will be a damn site easier to fix now then after!
Cute kids BTW! Looks like the're enjoying the place.

Thanks Doug and all the replies. Looks like the conclusion is to strip the old siding off. I know it will only take a few hours to pull it off, guess I thinking about taking the easy way by just leaving it on. A complicating factor is the aluminum soffitt and channel is nailed over the siding. So, I will either need to remove the soffitt or cut the siding off along the edge of the channel. Again, thanks for the input!
