Hardie Panel Board and Batten question

I’m putting up 4 x 8 Hardie Panel over foam sheathing in a board and batten look.
Is there any way to attach battens when I’m in a situation where there is no stud to nail into? Window trim is sometimes a concern also.
Thanks for your expert advice.

Use adhesive caulk or urethane construction adhesive to attach battens. Holding them in place while the adhesive sets is problematic. Painters tape may hold if the battens are straight. A few angled nails through the batten into the hardi panel will also work.
Window openings are tricky. Use methods that apply to plywood siding.
window trims
I'm even wondering if I should put a layer of 1/2 inch ply over the foam in order to create something to nail to for some window trim situtations
There should be enough framing around the window to nail narrow trim to solid lumber. Wide trim would need a solid base to nail into.
I think the plywood sheathing would be a good idea.

It may not make it for aesthetic reasons, but.............
most 16 oc framing goes from one end to another (at corners it is what it is) and so if you're 4x8's were held to that, you'd have no problem finding studs. The breaks in the panels would then be also at 16" centers.
Also, what does Hardie say about permissable / recommended fastening of their panels? do they have a detail on the battens also?
PL Premium (polyurethane adhesive) would be my choice of glues for batten to panel. A non foam destroying adhesive for panel to foam (but not to secure it at the edges of the panel-I'd be wary of thinking it would hold that together)
I'd think that screws would work -- just maybe drill the clearance hole first and don't pull them too tight.

hardi board over foam
into what are you attaching the hardiboard?
the panels will attach with nails into the studs, but there are some areas where the battens will not fall on a stud.
