Hardiplank: with or without furring …
I’ll be working with hardiplank 6 1/4″ vertical siding for the first time as soon as my order gets in and I’m wondering just how crucial it is to fur-up the entire wall before fastening the hardiplank on. I KNOW I’ve seen whole houses done in hplank where the plank is nailed directly to the cdx sheathing over felt. If it’s calked well at the ends and painted with a quality product and the inside walls are well vapor-barriered to prevent too much moisture from coming through to the backside is there really much danger of rotting or moisture damage if you DONT stand it out from the wall with furring?
thanks –

There is a product made for this, it has little dimples in it so water drains off the Hardi.
WeatherTrek is the name of it, I've used it and liked it.

how would 30 lb felt keep a clear air-barrier for moisture flow and evaporation behind the hardiplank??? I don't get it.
nb
The felt firring strips act the same as any firring strip...
air in bottom and out top for evaporation
water down out the bottom (over the flashing). Troy Sprout

Any chance you could take a picture of the trim that is going over that boxed soffit?
Sure, rickjl
I used 1x and ext ply and primed all the cuts before installation.
That corner trim is salvaged/stripped redwood from the deconstruction... it was the only thing worth keeping
