I tried to post this earlier and it seems to have disappeared. Forgive me if this is a repeat.
I need to cut a trap door into a hardwood floor (has regular subfloor and joists beneath) for access to a crawlspace. What’s a good source for hinges, lid support, drop-down ladders, etc.? I’ve searched the web but, as usual, I get more noise than information. Any pointers?
thanks

I once had a house whos crawl space could only be accessed through the floor (I would've had to lose way to much weight to make it through the foundation). We just made lift out panels. If it's really a crawl space, do you need a ladder? Just go with the Henry Ford school of development, least is best...
I would prefer a minimal solution too, except that this is a vacation house and once it snows the only way to get to the crawl space to turn on/off water, drains, water heaters, etc.. will be through the trap door. This means it will be used pretty regularly and maybe by guests and tenants, so I want to make it as easy as possible. A hinged door with lid support (a two foot square slab of 3/4" subfloor plus solid oak flooring is pretty heavy) I think is a must, and a drop-down ladder too, though I may just build a steep stair if I can't find one.
