Inspired by this blog, http://moderninmn.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html , I decided to replace this hideous railing in the new pad.
Here is my temporary “shop”. At least it was a nice day. All posts and the top rail were fabricated from some recycled fir 4×4 (resawn to 3×4 for posts and full dimension 2×4 for top rail).

Looks nice, alot better than the original.
That's exactly what I wanted to do at our lake cottage, the inspector nixed it, said no horizontals.
If the "ladder effect" (horizontals) is an issue with the building inspector,we have put up plastic snow fence or plexiglass over rails to get our U&O permit, removing them later.Baseboard been VERRRY good to me
Make sure you put some heat shrink over those cable ends or someone will get hurt.
Did you ever test the strength of the hammered swedges on the cable loops? Or the tear out weights of the eye-bolts? Lot's of hardware I've gotten lately has looked good but far weaker than I expcted, especially the cheap stainless fittings found at the BBs.
Looks nice but it'd never pass here, gaps appear too wide.
Like the existing conformed to the 4" diameter rule???

You're right but I have more confidence in the original rail meeting resitance (is it 200 or 250lbs?) than the hardware store fittings. The swedged fittings on the cables would probably take a pretty good load, even if done in a vice or hammmered with a sledge but the turnbuckles and eye-bolts...
If it ever becomes an issue, I'll cut the cables and install hogwire. Until that day, I'll just be glad the previous piece of eye pain is gone.
Jesse,
I like what you did and how you did it.
When you gonna post some more of your TF or custom woodwork pics?
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
chuck,Thanks. That's high praise, coming from you.I am only a part timer these days in building, mostly just small projects for myself and friends. However, I did just discover a bunch of old pictures during the move and also have procured a scanner, so I'll dig a few older pics up.
Yeah...I think you're right.Runnerguy
