hardwood floor: carpet glue removal
Any tips for removing decades-old carpet glue from hardwood floor? Aside from the inevitable sanding, that is. Just looking for a good jump-start. Heat? Solvents?
Thanks.

i heard some guys here come up with some pretty good ideas, they will be here soon with some different ways. anyway i just fire up the sander with 24 grit and move pretty quickly, trying to keep it from gumming up.you will go through a lot of paper, but if i spend 30-50 bucks on sandpaper and stay off my knees i'm all for it. larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
hired a floor guy to sand the whole house, vinyl glue and all...he charged 1.50 sq ft, job looked great, owner was happy & I was paid. Just sand it. Good luck

Carbide paint scraper, if you have the time. It will remove the finish if you go deep enough, and smooth out many imperfections. Di it carefully and the floor is ready to be refinished. Almost dustless, very quiet, no rental fees.

Not really any tips to offer. Just get all the big stuff up first and then sand it! lol
I have done lots of these and I would expect to go through 7 or 8 sheets of the roughest, nastiest sandpaper for the floor sander one can find. That is, for about three or four rooms.
It probably isn't worth it to go at it with heat guns and whatever else there is. By the time one gets all the stuff up he/she could have sanded twice.

We always just hand scrape it. A couple a guys with good 6" scrapers can remove a tremendous amount of material quickly.
After scraping we just make the first cut with old paper.
thanks, y'all.
I'm on it this Saturday, probably use every tip that's been posted. See how it goes.
