Is there any difference between the stain used on hardwood floors and any other wood stains? I assumed they are identical and that the floor finish is protected by the urethane. The reason I ask is a friend has had some trouble getting her cherry floor to match her cabinets. The cabinets are kind of a burgundy color, whereas the floor ended up looking more like Walnut. I assumed the floor guy got the wrong color, what do you think?

Yes, provided the floor and the cabs are the same species. Even then, age, same wood, different tree or the way it was cut will change the finish look. A simple test of scrap should have revealed the chance of matching and allowed some doctoring to bring it close.

Different results could be caused by different-
1) Stain Manufacturers "colors" - one companys cherry might lean towards a natural shade while others like Bartly gel stain if I recall correctly has a purple look to it.
2) Stain types- pigmented, dyes, toners, oil based, waterbased, and gel stains all can give different results.
3) Sanding tecnique -intermediate and final grit.

It's O.k. to think out of the box, Just don't walk off of the plank!
Cherry is photosensitive -- the color will change anyway over time. I agree that samples should have been made before staining the whole floor.
