Today I rented a floor buffer at HD.
The clerk told me HD is getting burned by people renting high dollar equipment and not returning it.
For example, they rent a $2,000 machine and write a check to be used as a security deposit (they don’t have a credit card)
The check bounces and they never see the guy or the tool again.

Doesn't HD require an ID when renting a tool?
I guess you could make up a reasonable fake and use it but that seems like an awful lot of work.
I didn't show an ID today. He asked me "have you rented here before" and I said yes.I gave him my HD card and he printed out my bill and that was it.Some of the equipment is high dollar stuff.^^^^^^

"I didn't show an ID today. He asked me "have you rented here before" and I said yes.I gave him my HD card and he printed out my bill and that was it."Yes you did.You are on file and you gave them an HD CC and that IDed you.At the local rental shop I used my name is on file..

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Might be a lot of work for an honest person, but what if you were dishonest and going into business for yourself as a ____ or a _____ and needed a big piece of equipment?"Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Must be different policies at different stores. I had to give a CC and drivers license to rent a nail gun. I herad the clerk tell a customer that he had to have a major CC, not a debit card and DL to rent anything.
That might be the case in Kansas. Here in NJ, every time I've rented from them, they insist on a major credit card and my driver's license. Since I've always come up with that, I don't know what they would do if I didn't have one. I also don't know if they would accept a debit card that's marked "Visa."
Possibly your State laws don't allow them to do that there. It's also possible that the clerk has things wrong. Seems to me that HD wouldn't have a tool rental in stores where that was a problem.
I recently rented a boom forklift, probably an $80,000 machine. Called Hertz and the guy took my name and credit card info down. That's it, all over the phone, never signed anything.
Everything comes here by car ferry, so we arranged for the machine to be parked at the ferry terminal on the mainland, so I could ride over and then drive it onto the return ferry (saving myself a $750 delivery fee). I get over there and sure enough, it's sitting in the parking lot with the key in it.
Yes, it feels good to be trusted! Maybe these ARE the good ol' days.
