HDMI cables

bobl | Posted in General Discussion on January 6, 2009 02:07am

is there really any difference between the different brands?

seen Monster cables for $100 for 1 meter. Sony at $80 for 1 meter, and Phillips for $40 for 1 meter.

when you think of connecting cable, vcr, blue ray, and who knows what else, cables can be really big money.

    How about $10? Or less.

Check the links in that thread.

    short answer no.

Great place to get cables: (I've gotten all of mine from them, great prices, good quality, quickly shipped)

$12 for 3 feet (plus shipping).

They have some that are US made if that matters.

HDMI is digital, so it either works perfectly or it doesn't.  I saw a $100 monster cable too - man, what a ripoff.

These cables are the most over priced item you can buy!

Do I really need a cable priced at 30% of the DVD player?

Being as these cables are mass produced at a blinding pace on a fully automated machine, And you would need some very fancy testing tools to detect a difference.

Yep way over priced and look around for the right price, About $10.

Bob I buy mine at a discount store called Big Lots. last time they had RCA brand for under 10, 7.99 I think. Check these guys out I ordered a hdmi to dvi from them cheaper then I could find local. http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/video-cables/hdmi-cables/c10000-c12000-c12001.html

Some one is sure to say it matters but the average person will not tell any difference unless you are talking a very long run.

Try monoprice.com they have great prices and have flat in wall versions you can pull through tight chases around mantels and heat runs... I know I just finished a run at my own home. They also have flat panel mounting brackets very reasonably priced.

I have a 6' HDMI cable that I bought on Amazon for $2.95. My BlueRay player and HD TV are perfectly happy with it.

As long as a cable is certified to meet the HDMI 1.3 standard, you're good to go regardless of price. Monster and other premium brands are superior mainly in marketing, not function.

As length of cable increases, larger gauge wire is necessary to meet HDMI 1.3 standard, since resistive line losses are greater in smaller gauge wire.

I figure that by the time corrosion of its non-gold-plated pins affects my cheap cable's function, HDMI will have been replaced by something else anyway.

    Same as granitestater,

when I was doing my home theater I read up over at the AVSForums, they were pretty hot on the stuff from bluejeans. Other there recomended monoprice.

I needed a 45' run of hdmi, I bought from bluejeans. Bluejeans describes their products well. Lets you know why one cable is better than another, and if the better cable will actually make a difference in your specific application.

    1. GraniteStater | Jan 06, 2009 06:17am | #11

AVS Forums turned me on to Blue Jeans too... those nerds really know their AV stuff. My brother is a high end security and A/V contractor and he swears by em too... and he lays down miles and miles of of cabling for closed circuit video systems, integrated whole-house home audio, etc.

I got a 50" plasma and Sony home theater.  The helpful Best Buy associate sold me a $79 surge supressoe, $60 HDMI, $20 screen cleaner, $20 dig audio cable.  I went to Sams and got a "HD essential kit" for $20 with hdmi, composite video 3 wire, two wire audio, and cleaner.  Got a supressor with better specs for $20.  Took $153 worth back.

Agree for short runs you would never see the difference.

There is nothing about the quality of these cables' transmission that you will ever be able to notice.

The cheapest will do just fine

I have laughed for decades at Monster Cable Brand and those who buy it. No one, ever, has been able to convince me either by demonstration or with empirical evidence that stuff sounds better.

People still buy it though.... spare no expense, rational or irrational, when it comes to the sound system.

    Scott.

Had you posted this in the Tavern I would have replied sooner. :)

Try MonoPrice. I've done business with them several times (putting together another order now), including buying HDMI cables.

I almost did post it there, but thought some folks may not go there and it might be of wider interest.the price differentials I'm seeing are amazing, 20 ft hdmi 1.3 cables for $4 !!now I have to figure out what cagagory 2 (so there must be a 1) means and other descriptions.

HDMI (High-bandwidth Digital Media Interface) is a living standard. Started with Profile 1.0, then 1.2, 1.2x, 1.3, and now 2.0. None of these should affect your decision in terms of buying an HDMI cable, though.

Also, HDMI includes DVI as a subset to the overall standard. This means for your needs the cheapest cable should work fine. And I've compared my el'cheapo HDMI cables from MonoPrice to Monster Cable costing $100.

BTW, it was nice listening to the pimple-faces Best Buy cashier tell me that his employee pricing (which is like 5% over what BB pays for it) is half that $100.

I've also bought a $35-40 HDMI switcher with four inputs and one output. Works like a champ. Compare that to the name-brand solutions for $100-600!
