Installing a 48 inch 2×12 header over 2 windows with a doubled cripple (doubled for spacing the windows) in the center. The load is an outside wall holding a lean-to roof. After face nailing the first jack stud to the king stud I saw that the beam had separated from the king stud by about 1/8 inch (the king stud is face nailed x6 to the beam). Questions: 1) is the fact that the beam isn’t tight against the king stud a problem, 2) I don’t want to risk further separation by nailing the opposite jack stud – can I use brass screws instead to attach it to the king stud.

If you have room, you should be able to drive the king back into the header.
Brass? I wouldn’t.
The crip should be fastened securely to the king. I’d use my nail gun or structural screws.
There are many reasons they call this rough framing.
What does your level say?
