We are installing windows in new construction. We have a 3′ 6″ concrete wall. On this wall we are installing a window RO 8′ 1″ W x 4′ 0 1/2″ H. The windows have already been purchased. The ceiling in this daylight basement are 8′. What is the minimum size header we can use to get these windows in? Should we saw the concrete wall down 6″ or use steel for a header? Anyone with any suggestions?

If it were me I would hold my header up in the floor system and use a LVL for my header. What will the floor be framed of and is this a single story on two story? With this info I could tell you the size you could use.

You generally head up in the floor system for this kind of install but the header size is calculated based on load as well as span. Calculating load is dependent on size of building or in other words, how many square feet of floors, walls and roof and possible porches will load onto this header.
