I would like to hear opinions regarding installing headers (and associated jack/ cripples/ trimmers) in non-bearing partitions. One person I asked indicated it’s only for nailing trim and can therefore be kept to 4×4 (in a 2×4 wall) regardless of the opening size: other people have indicated otherwise. As to jacks/ cripples/ trimmers is 1x (3/4″) considered sufficient, necessary or? [this was an issue on a recent job where installing a pocket door was limited on each end of the RO, and yes, header hangers were ultimately involved]
Thanks,
David

I generally put in the cripples, but there is no need. Habit more than anything for me.
One thing I do try to do is make sure that whatever I use for the header stock is tall enough to allow nailing at the top of whatever trim I will be putting on.
Nothing worse than trying to place a nail into nothing when you really need one to get a bite into something for drawing power.
