I am looking for some help on this hearth. The surround and the vertical front edge of the hearth will be natural stone veneer in roughly square/rect drystack pattern. There is going to be a free-standing Jotul Oslo roughly 2/3 out of this bump-out.
I originally was going to use irregular flagstone for the hearth, but the I want something easier to sweep ash off, but still looks rustic. This is in a log home. Any ideas would be great. I want to keep a tan color, so bluestone or slate is out.
My second question is: Should I simply stucco the inside of this bump-out or get some thin firebrick and stick it to the Durock like a veneer stone? Will fire brick stick to Durock?
Thanks a lot for any ideas.

I would go with honed flagstone, for easy sweeping, with a chiseled edge for a more rustic look. In my neck of the woods, in higher end construction, I typically pay between $25-$37 a square foot, labor and material. The fluctuation in price is material choice. Local stone is less but restrictive on color.
I'd think any of your choices would stick to durock assuming you use the right thinset/mixture. Why wouldn't you use the same material inside the opening as the surround?
I assume you're meeting clearance requirements/construction for the wood burner.
