Heavy Duty Wood Screen Doors Northern Michigan Climate
I am requesting some feedback on how to make long-lasting heavy duty wood screen doors for a very old and busy summer cottage in northern Michigan. They need to meet the following criteria: a painted finish; hold up to heavy duty dog and kid traffic; easy to fix without fancy hardware; accommodate eyehooks we use to anchor storm panels during the winter months.
Full disclosure – I am not a wood worker only a mere architect. I would like to detail the doors as follows: 1-1/2″ thick x 5″ wide stile and rails with exception of bottom rail which can be 12″ height with a copper or sim. kickplate; mortise and tenon and glued construction; re-use existing wood branch pulls. Suggestions would be appreciated for species, hardware (particularly to accommodate the 2x thickness) and mesh.
Thank you in advance.
