*I understand they both work, but don't know the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other.
*TomI just had 10 helical piers installed, 7 underpined an existing foundation and 3 were open, spanned by a grade beam. HPs are quick, mess free and work very well. All of mine were installed in less than 2 days, in not so good a location. I paid $1000 per under pinned pier, and $570/ open pier. My installation required only 14' of pier, my installer tells me he has installed them up to 60'!! The only real concern is your soil type and how deep is bedrock. I think HPs are the way to go. Underpinning an existing foundation with a larger, modified concrete footer is archaic, and may even worsen the problem if not done correctly. Call D&B drilling here in Colorado, ask them what they think. 303.423.6834ZAP
