We’re repairing rotted sills & lower clapboards on a 1920’s house in northwest CT — and one wall had rotted sheathing up to the roof, with parts of the studs also rotted. The interior is drywall and what looks like blown-in fiberglass was in the wall. All the other walls have 1″ vents under the windows. The wet basement just got a sump pump and dehumifidier, but we still have concerns about moisture coming up through the foundation walls. We plan to install backprimed cedar clapboards over 15 lb. felt. What’s the best fix? There’s no room for a rainwater wall. Do we need to replace the sheetrock with foil-backed? Do we need insulation (a P.E. we talked to said air is good insulation and we should just make the exterior wall tight)? What’s the best sheathing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
