We’re buying a new gas furnace. Two of the three contractors we’ve talked to recommend either Trane or American Standard. Great. I understand that. Their bids are similar on those products.
But when I asked for their next line down (hoping to get some mid-tier recommendations), one suggested GMC and the other suggested a Goodman. I know they are both made by Goodman Manfucturing. So here are my questions:
1. What, if any, is the difference between a GMC-line product and a Goodman-line product?
2. Is Goodman/GMC/Janitrol considered mid-tier? From what I’ve read, many consider them bottom-tier. And many warn you away from them entirely. One of my contractors did mention that Goodman has had a bad reputation, but they have now turned over a new leaf and want to be competitive.
3. What constitues the price difference (about $575-650 in my bids) between a Trane/Am. Stan. furnace and a Goodman/GMC furnace?
I’d love to save the money, but I know that the more efficient these furnaces are (both are 92+), the more reliability matters.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

You've already answered most of your own questions, but here are my views on them. Yes, GMC and GOODMAN are one and the same. The GOODMAN'S are considered by the trade to be strictly an economy or "builder's" line of equipment. There are many differences in the materials used to manufacture these 2 brands of equipment, and in the quietness of operation. In my opinion, if you're planning on staying in the house, go ahead and get the more expensive equipment.
