Help! How to safely frame fireplace for new faux stone
So we took off the 1960s brick and started framing for faux stone. But if I understand the code correctly, this wood frame cannot sit against the black firebox- correct? 6″ needed…so how to and what to do especially around the firebox opening as the frame extends 6″ more into the room…and does the faux stone have to be 6″ from the firebox opening?
Thank you!!

Re-frame with metal studs
Thank you so much....we are now learning how to put these together as we only know wood! New adventures! Yikes! We are thinking metal around the bix and in front of it and wood the rest??
And then attach Hardiboard 1/2" to metal studs with screws and your ready to stone
Thank you! So we bought some metal studs and have durock cement board! Deciding to tile or not tile the black metal fire box....and learning howntondonthe metal studs....should we be concerned about weight bearing with the metal?
You need to check with the stone manufacturer to see if the product is meant for this use.
if not, keep it away from the hot fireplace.
some of these products are ok, made of masonry materials. (if you use the right adhesive)
others are composite, and lots of plastic, not suitable to let get hot.
Wow, thank you!
