I posted this on Knots and heard some thoughts; still listening. I’m trying to recreate the look of the beaded board in this photo. http://www.bohlarchitects.com/centerv_/k… The captions say it is mahogany. I assume African mahogany, but would a load of African mahogany contain the variety of colors seen in this photo. I’m not very familiar with the wood.
Would love to hear your ideas.

Have you tried...
contacting the architect?
"mahogany" is generic for a bunch of tropical woods
"Mahogany" is used for a bunch of tropical hard woods, from different biologic families and coming from at least three continents.
True american mahoganies, Swietenia mahagoni, and Swietenia macrophylla are endangered throughout the western hemisphere, and hard to get. The good news is they are growing it on plantations in asia. And it is fairly available.
You could also use clear walnut.
I did email the architect but no response. After all, I am trying to steal their look. I'm interested in the variety of colors the wood displays. I know mahogany is a term used for several species, but have others typically seen such variety? I'm looking at ordering a load of African mahogany through a local mill shop, and I'll get what I get. Otherwise, I might use cedar with which I can select the boards myself.
Wood ?
Teak?
larry
Here's my take on this.
If you want varied, then plead and hope for consistant.
If this wood shows up like it usually does, you get what you don't really want.
That mismatched bunch of coulours is horrid and typical of cheaper phillipine "mahogany"
Yep, looks like Luan to me too. Balau and Meranti probably mixed, as both are marketed as Luan.
I takes shellac real well <G> Dents real easy too.
Jes' mah opinion, but that bohl interior looks insipid/overdone to me, and I like wood. Ceiling OK but 'too busy', the walls would likely look better vertical, eh?
