Help Me: Will Using Topping Compound Help The World’s Worst Drywall Finisher
Will using topping compound instead of all-purpose joint compound help my drywall patch jobs look better? I know nothing is a magic bullet but if switching to topping could improve my finish by even 5 percent I’d be happy.

If it's that bad, get some #60 or #80 grit sandpaper and sand the high spots. This is not a finess exercise. It's not to going to be pretty nor is that the intention.
Then, better than getting a topping compound, invest in a better, wider knife or trowel and a regular sized hawk. Apply compound liberally and remove as much as possible in a few smooth, broad/ wide strokes. Each coat should be double the sq ft coverage of the previous coat.
Hope this helps,
