Hi all!! First time here so here it goes… I am planning to install a steel replacement door on an old wood jamb. Any hints, tips, wisdom on how to go about doing this by myself? I mean like how to hold the door and measure and shim, etc. Thanks …. Bud

Depends on how new the steel door is, and how old the frame is.
In some cases, new steel doors that appear to be 36" (for example) will not fit properly in the frame of an older 36" wood door.
So, step #1 needs to be......
Measure twice.
Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.
First make sure that the existing frame is square. Then, the easiest way to go about it is to make a storyboard, place it in the frame, mark all of the hinges, and transfer the board to the door and mark it.
Another way is to use the old door as a measuring pattern--assuming that it fit the frame decently. Don't overlook the hinge backset. It's critical to the door operating properly.
My tip - buy the steel door prehung and replace jamb and all. it will be easier, faster, and better by far

Good tip but why not tell him how to measure the opening so that he gets the correct jamb size?
great idea. Take the ball and run with it

Your tip. Let's see if you can lead him through measuring and ordering, then removing, altering and installing.
PS: Don't forget the screws.
