I live in NYC where all apartments must have steel “apartment entry doors”. These are available as a one piece welded frame. I’m often asked to replace old wood frame doors with the proper metal ones but have yet to figure out a method of getting the new one piece door (which is designed to wrap around the wall) into the opening. Its like trying to get a puzzle piece that is too large into the puzzle. What am I missing?
thanks in advance for any advice!

Get a 3pc knockdown frame.
Just like last poster said, Same door available as knockdown with correct rating, but rough opening will be too big. So you will have to do some carpentry and drywall.
Wait! You are replacing a wood frame! R.O. should be close to right for KD frame
If you have to use 1 piece frame, make RO 1/4" oversized all around with rock cut back a few inches. Then use straps attatched to clips on frame and screwed to wall stud to hold frame hold frame in place. Rock slips behind frame.
Make sure frame is plumb and square after you hang the rock, cause you can knock it out of plumb when hanging the rock.
Much easier to use a KD frame. If door is larger than a 3' 0"x 7'0" it should probly be one piece frame cause of weight issues.

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
