I am a lead carpenter working in Denver, Co. My wife and I are looking to move to a warmer, safer climate as we are expecting our first child. We are primarily interested in Northern Arizona or Southern California and any help or feed back as far as job availability, pay scale and even living expenses from any framing sub-contractors would be greatly appreciated.
I am 27 yrs. old and experience includes some re-model and track-home framing with most experience in custom and super-custom homes in New Mexico and here in Denver. We are currently wrapping up an 11,400 sq. ft. four-level (including finished basement) home in a private neighborhood (approx. $3.5 million) with another 9000 sq. ft. home to start early February. Again, any information will be greatly appreciated.

*Hello E.S.,Don't know that San Diego is "safer" in any way, but it is warmer than Denver. Housing prices here are still over the top, but there are some nice old fixer-uppers on the East side of downtown. I'd buy one if I could, but need to fix this place up first. Not a framer contracter, but here's some info for you.I got one reply and have been quite pleased w/this GC's knowledge, articulation, and attention to detail, alternatives, etc. My refurbishing/remodeling will have to take place over time, but there will (I hope) come a time when there can be some major decking and even basement refinishing. If he hasn't checked the board lately (due to slaving over my estimates), I'll be sure he does.Sorry I can't be of more help, except perhaps to say that my Bro, a tile contractor for years, has never been w/out work in the area, at least working on high-end, custom projects. People will keep coming here until it looks like L.A. or Mexico City. Good luck, and congrats on your impending gift! The cooks and Tavern folks love to see baby pics, so be sure to post one so we can tell you how darling your new one is!Best wishes!

        *are you still looking, kai?brian

*Brian, as of tonight, I'm not sure (hope not!), but somewhere down the road the crew will need to be bigger than one. I think his ISP is giving him probs, and I'm awaiting the Struc Eng report. Lotsa work here, providing I can pay.Interesting thing, and, I might as well blab here then cut/paste later when I can get back through to my GC:Struct eng (in conj w/GC?) came up w/$50K for the foundation (GC, before any price was established--I wasn't there then--suggested temp alternative, OK'd.)Later, GC said that would be maybe $6K. (We both want a second opinion on the larger figure, and will scrutinize the PE's report.) Just today I read in my local tiny rag abt houses my age (~90-100) on foundations like mine (clay/rock/small amt of cement-sand mix/yes, we sag and drift--plus, I have a "basement", something most leftcoast folks don't "get"). His max was $30K for complete foundation rebuild. Hmmm. Research research. Woohoo $20K for fountains and plants! I wish!Brian, I suggest that, based on the above info, you try to bring some added value to the group. My GC will need additional expertise, but I have the final hiring say.Best wishes,kaiP.S. Keep in touch. Are you located in the vicinity? Did you send me a resume w/references at kaiforchi@aol.com ? aohell is sometimes a bitch. Email me at Taunton if you have a prob. Please make the subj meaningful. TIA

*the director of my department will be contacting you. i will be referring him to this discussion so he can get a preliminary idea of the scope of your project.i'll continue to monitor your discussion thread.best wishes, brian

*Thanks, Brian. Make sure he makes the subj line meaningful. I get a lot of mail at that addy. I also have another Help Wanted ad re Electrician--not sure if that is also in your company's scope of services.

*hi kai.My director's name is Todd Schafer. Company name is Sunrise Maintenance and Construction. Todd is the GC. Lic# is B-605193. We perform all phases of construction, including electrical. He attempted to email you today; but, he was uncertain that it went through (he's not registered with Breaktime Forum and unfamiliar with the setup here). If you find nothing pertaining to his response in your email account, we will resend information, or you may call him at our corporate office on Monday morning. His number is (858) 571-8757.brian

          4. kai_ | Feb 09, 2002 07:39am | #8

*Thanks for following up, Brian, I appreciate it. Please ask Todd to resend to kaiforchi@aol.com; as of now, I have not received it. I may be very busy Monday, but will make every effort to call/leave work # so we can take this off the board. He can press the Email to Sysop button up top and get help re getting an account here. I can't remember if you had to do anything more than merely register, instead of login as a guest, and it was automatically your "handle" (mine is kai) @ whatever the Taunton addy is. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm getting other aol mail fine, so it isn't on my end this time!
