I need to recreate a very small amount of some casing trim for a project I’m working on and could use some help. The profile is very simple, basically a 1/2″ radius beading detail on flat 1×3 s4s stock. I’ve included a .pdf file that shows what I’m talking about… it’s the casing/back band detail on the top left.
I thought it would be simple enough to use a roundover or beading bit in a router, but now that it’s actually time to do it, I’m having trouble figuring it out. A simple roundover bit (like Amana 49518) won’t work because of the bearing guide at the bottom. I thought of using a beading bit (like Amana 49618) but the shoulder that it leaves at the bottom of the bit isn’t deep enough. Amana has some plunge type round-over bits that I thought would work (like 49706) but they’re elongated at the bottom, which would eliminate the bottom shoulder. Finally, Amana has some plunge beading bits which look like they’d be perfect (56170-56178) but they only go up to a radius of 5/16″ and I need 1/2″.
So, am I missing something obvious? How can I simply reproduce enough of this simple casing profile for 1 door?
thanks!

I don't know about the Amana bit, but you can remove the bearings on the ones I use, (Carb-Tech), and profile on a router table or use an edge guide. This will give you the deeper bottom bead you are looking for.
Providing the cutter and shaft are one piece, so the cutter doesn't go flying off without the bearing.
Try looking at http://www.woodbits.com. I just checked and they do carry a 1/2" radius beading bit. I am not sure if the shoulders are deep enough, but they might be worth looking at. I have used these bits and for the price you can't beat 'em.

marnold,
How about dado out the 1x4 and shoot in some 1/2" quarter round.
MLCS has a 1/2".

Cutter diam. = 1-1/2"
Cutter height = 3/4"
Cutter radius = 1/2"

the bearing comes off with an allen wrench. Just another option
