Help with framing a wall between ceramic and carpet transition
Hi all,
Have enjoyed this site for some time and now just getting involved in the discussion.
Looking for some guidance in how to frame out a wall where there is a ceramic tile to carpet transition. I’ve attached a photo for reference.
The existing wall has two large pocket doors framed out that pull closed in the middle (about a 5′ span or so). It’s for a bedroom (carpet) that leads to a kitchen (ceramic tile). My objective is to close off the pocket door by framing the wall out to accommodate, frame, and hang a regular bedroom door. Figure i’ll cut the carpet back to accommodate (plywood underneath), however not sure how to treat that transition.
Was wondering what you all would use to attach the bottom plate to the ceramic tile / carpet transition. Current wall is fairly thick (offhand probably 6″ or so, old 1930’s type home) and i’d want to continue the thickness/profile for aesthetics.
This is in a rental unit in a 3 family house I just purchased so rental grade rather than high end finish grade is fine.
Let me know your thoughts and thank you in advance!

If ceramic and not porcelain tile, then score and remove the ceramic tile and the carpet and frame wall to subfloor. If porcelain, then I would rabbit the bottom plate so it rests on both the subfloor and porcelain tile evenly and nail only into subfloor side.
I'd definitely go with the rabbeted plate. It would be a pain to score the tile ( a diamond blade in a grinder?) and remove it.
