Summer is here, so here I am – again. We’re going to tackle our front porch and steps this summer, but I have no idea where to begin. We’d like the steps to start where the front of the house is, then have a level section before the front door. We want to use bluestone or fieldstone. I’m wondering what type of foundation we need, and how to attach (or not attach) the porch to the house.
Eventually, we’ll extend the roof over the porch, so I know we’ll need to add a footing for the support column. Any help is much appreciated (as usual). I’m happy to provide details, but figured since I’m coming at this blind I’d put it out there, then answer specifics. Thanks!

Some pictures would help.
What do you have currently? Is there currently a porch, or are you adding that?
One More Try for Pics
I tried embedding the pics in the body of my reply, but that didn't work either, so I'll try uploading one more time. Basically, there's nothing there right now. The wall with the front door is recessed, so there are other sides where the porch would touch the house in addition to the front door wall. The guy who put up the siding just left a space directly under the front door, so I think we'll probably have to remove some of the siding on the other walls below the porch level. Siding is Hardi-Plank, Koma trim, Tyvek and plywood sheathing under the siding. Brick legde at grade and poured concrete below that. (We didn't use the brick ledge, but the foundation was in place when we bought the property.
