I am searching for some sources of quality wood paneling. This seems to be a very confusing subject. Perhaps someone can shed some light on it. I am working on a house that has chestnut veneer paneling that is vintage 1975. I would like to find more of this. Ash might do as a substitute for extinct chestnut. But I want a veneer that is thick enough to take a polyurethane finish and be durable. I don’t want plastic and vinyl.
I would also like to learn about how to find solid wood paneling and wainscotting other than yellow pine and knotty western cedar. What is available? And about what does it cost?

Greetings doug,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again which will increase it's viewing.
Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

Thanks rez. Paneling seems to be a difficult subject, but I have faith in this site. It delivers some very good advice.Right now I am wondering if it is possible to find clear Douglas Fir paneling. Fir used to be so common they made plywood out of it, but the only softwood plywood I can find now is yellow pine. Is fir plywood still on the market?
I was reading Installing and Hanging Doors by Gary Katz (Taunton Press), and there are some photos showing beautiful straight grained six-panel doors. They look like fir to me, but I am not sure. Recent doors have flat grained pine rails, stiles, and panels that look very different.
My first questions are, can you find interior fir doors now? Can you find plank paneling of Douglas fir? If so, where?
Thanks
It would seem that if there is a buyer ready to purchase that barring a lack of raw material someone somewhere should have those products available.
Hopefully a more knowledgeable fellow BTer will see this and have some info for you.
Cheers
Doug, I can purchase CVG Doug Fir doors quite readily here. But I am in the heart of the Fir logging industry. 4, 6, 8-panel, almost any desired pattern. Here is a link to one manufacturer I use.
There is a dealer locator on the Home page at this site. http://www.simpsondoor.com/Fir plywood is the standard here, although I don't see much that I would call real high grade, although I also don't have call for it. I can buy CVG fir door skins quite easily though. Found another brand I also have used. Also has dealer locator . http://www.jeld-wen.com/interiordoors/wood/index.cfm

Doug
I did a kitchen down in Austin TX that was made intirely out of VGDF. No raised panel construction. All euro cabs with slab doors but we were able to find VGDF at Austin Hardwoods. I assume if they had it that its readily available.
We purchased both 1/4" and 3/4" VGDF.
