I have a sauna that was constructed with 4×6 hemlock timbers approximately 50 years ago. The exterior is treated with an opaque stain.
Several of the timbers are rotting and need to be replaced. They are 3.5″ x 5.5″ actual size and were tong & grooved.
I am assuming that that hemlock lumber will not be available and am wondering if pine or fir would be capatible with hemlock.
Thanks for any help.

I don't see a problem with that from a practical perspective. Hemlock is still available and gets made into lumber some places. Sounds like a specialty item anyway.
where are you located? I am in NW Pa., lot of mills near that have hemlock any size you want.
