I got around to fooling with what I could use outta that Ash tree from you.
Here is the first of two awaiting storms to pass so I can get shellac-a-lackin and waxing.
Long time ago, I worked in a production type furniture plant, we handplaned reg ol’ #2 whitepine shelving and made “shaker/rustic/New England “style furniture. It actually sold quite well, but the shop was a sweat shop, and paid Piece rate, if ya couldn’t crank out stuff, you were not getting a paycheck worth a damm.
This pc. was called a “commode” I don’t know why, but I think they make great nightstands next to a bed,or a lamp table, or a basin holder.
Anyway, one was expected to make 20 a week, to get his 200.00 paycheck. LOL…I was young and hungry. And out of pine, I could still do it to this day.
This ash was some stringy, nasty, reaction wood, but I got it…feels good to have “planers elbow” again, and shine up all my old planes and spokeshaves and stuff.
I thought you might like to see what I was able to salvage out of th wood.
BTW, these are “spec” pcs. for a gallery up in Midway, KY. They’ll be a left door swing and right door swing. So the bed side use may trigger a sale…the gallery nabs 35% right off the top of my price, and I don’t yet know what I’ll charge. I did this in love of working with the wood, rather than a race the clock type deal..I started Sunday after noon and half a day yesterday and today. About 16 hours so far. The # 2 is ready to assemble.
I have it tilted back so the door won’t tumble off, I didn’t hinge it yet….
Yeah, I know the bench is a mess…thats the way I like my shop…too bad it is in the house! The DW just LOVES that…esp when the dog gets in the sawdust and plane shaveings and drags it all over the house.
Thanks for sawing that tree, and helping me out with it.

Dang, Duane -
It almost looks like you know what you're doing.

How about some more pics when you have some finish on it?
Thnx,
Yeah, I jumped the photo gun, it is too humid to apply finish without it blushing, and I got antsy.
Ron, I can do these things in my sleep...really. Very simple construction, just a helluva workout handplaneing all the parts and light sanding.
The back and adjustable shelf inside are"secondary wood" old Heart pine siding from the house in this case. Not the pretty stuff.
Oh, and the shell carving takes about 40 minutes from start to finish if the wood behaves. I did some on Chestnut, that about drove me bonkers, way too soft and brittle for carving, but this Brown Ash worked like a dream.
reason for calling it a Commode - I think - The old night stands were a honey bucket inside a cabinet like that where you flip the top up, the door open, and you have a seat on a throne to do your night business. Then flip it all closed for the servants to empty after you get up and go to breakfast.

I'd rather they "take" a crap than "leave" a crap. Looks good, dewd. You up for making some shutters?

Thanks.
Yep, anything ya need.
Fixing to call John@ Boonesborough ( the B&B guy) about them windows...got his #?
Nice work!
I'm pretty comfortable with a handplane, but carving is something I haven't done much of. Actually, virtually none.
I've got a decent set of carving tools, but never get around to using them.
Maybe when I retire.
Just two chisels, no carving tools needed.
Edit: didn't mean to be so short replying. I was on the phone at tha time.
Umm, layout the semi-circle with a compass, set it about 1/4" and walk off the outer edge with points. Shoot a line to the center point with a straightedge on every other outer point.
Dovetail saw that line on an angle to about 3/8ths deep at the outer edge, to nuthing at the center point. Chisel out the VEE and round over the tops and outer edges...wallow out a half moon at the skinny end of the vee...
sharp, sharp chisels, saves the sanding in the vee cuts.
Simple as can be, I use a 1" wide chisel to pare away, and a 3/8ths for setting in and cleaning out the vees.

nice and simple.
right now I'm into Mission-style furniture- not much carving there
but I'll keep your tricks filed away in my head for future use. Thanks.
See the edit to you..........
I knew a guy who lived in a house with no plumbing and everyone had a honey bucket under the bed. There was a VERY strict rule about only using it for number one. One night he used it for number two and his dad thrashed him good.
And you emptied you own.
Some finish on them...OK.
I still need to rub out the Lacquer, and wax them.
I got tied up messing with rebuilding some windows, so these took a back burner for a week.
Any how, here ya go............

The basement walls are poured. It will be time before we know it. As soon as we sell this house they will ramp up the schedule so it's hard to say.

Ohh That dump. I'm not too bad off there. I'm going to try to finish up the painting this weekend and then redo the bathroom next weekend. Then I'll put it on the market and see what happens. Installed six panel doors on the bedroom last weekend. Big difference. The wife likes the place now.

You get the take off on those shutters and understand what she wants?
MLK porch guy emailed me today and I think it's a go. He wants a better price. I don't have one. He's done this on every project I've done for him. Hems and haws for a day or two and then says "go ahead". Then pays the bill the day you give it to him.http://grantlogan.net/
I've never met a man that was owed as much as he thought he was.
Who you callin a Fairy? (G)
Ok yup..you need 2 at 55" and 2 at 38". Wether that is UNDERSTAND what she wants..I hope she wants just like ya got there out front ( nice work on the place BTW).
Lemme do some head scratchin on the $..them louvers are slower than a panel shutter. I'll preprime, you finish paint?
Only other option for MLK is T&M, but it'll work out about the same I bet.
I'll get up with ya.

I guess I changed the channel for a few minutes.

We ran into a glut of hanging gutter, and I lost my will to live..( I had a bad reaction to my thyroid meds, real bad..changed them and DR.s as well) ..anyway, I am still here for what ever Grant has that doesn't require mind numbing boredom.
So, I had a week where I could hardy face the day..then the meds wore away, and I got my steam back slowly ( the meds about killed my adrenal glands) and I wafted into getting some other work that seemed more up my alley ...I farted around getting work done on my house m my siding is well along the way and other long put off chores are getting done.
I just got the itch to spend some mental time in my so called shop, do something that exercises different brain cells for awhile.
I guess Dale didn't appreciate the severity of my need to get a break, he got rightiously pissed...oh well. He has a helper type guy, so he should be happy.
I am still available for what ever Grant needs, I guess we just rearranged somethings bizness wise. I need challange, creativity, art, and never repitition...I'd lose my mind if I was hanging gutter everyday.and that is not a good thing to lose.
Really, roofing is swell, box gutter is swell. I just choke on weeks on end of gutter. I have my new ( to me) van fully equipped to be whatever needed carpentry/roofing/ siding wise, I outfitted my F350 with a huge ladder rack for hauling whatever may arise..I guess I am a mercenary...LOL.
I have not pestered any other contractors for work, and I hope I wont have to, but if I can't muster up enough on my own, I am not to proud to call a few guys that may be looking for a sub.
Feeling great now BTW. I can't believe how bad I WAS till, I felt better. Scared the bejesus outta me. Overheard new Dr. call old DR. a few weeks ago. Quite the verbal exchange went on.
I guess I remember you being bored with gutter installs- just didn't realize you'd changed gears.
Glad you're feeling more challenged and mentally stimulated as well as healthier.
Your craftmanship will manifest itself in whatever format you work in I'm sure.
Best regards, Walter
Nice work,
I thought you were gonna use garnet shellac. Tell that 'CNC is better dude' to 'kiss my ash' I like the panel glue ups.
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
LOL. That is two coats of amber cut 50/50 outta the zinsser can.Brushed. Then 3 coats of Deft satin,sprayed...simple. I'll wax with 4/0 steelwool, and then a T shirt...good enough for the use they'll get.
Kinda cool being there when we slabbed out the log and seeing these 3 yrs later. I case ya didn't know, I had trekked up to David's in Indiana with my van completely void of anything, 5 hours up. We loaded the 1/2 ton Safari up to the dash board high and then some( took out the passenger seat) no stickers, solid wood..LOL
Drove it home on tires filled up to 55lbs.
Then months later, went up and we trekked across the mountains to Mikes "Rhodefest", and back to his place..sawed another log from the same tree, and I hauled it home as well.
So, yeah..there is some soul in that woodwork. His and mine.
(if I was making a hundred, well...CNC would be nice.(G) )
I like rubbing out with a Scotch-Brite pad to avoid any possibility of reaction between water spills and steel splinters. Nylon is kinder to your lungs, too. I made one of the husbands a desk that came from some sort of evergreen oak that fell down in a storm in our yard in California. Similar grain and color to your ash, oddly enough. 27 years later, i still have a few slabs of that tree with me in MT.
I have to open my can o' wax and see what pad is in there, could be green or maroon scrubbie or a wad of SW..
Haven't had steel bits give a problem (Yet) ..I do know it is verbotton on guitars, the SW will goober up on the pickup magnets...not a good thing. (G)
Actually, I also have a jar of beeswax and turp , that is like a paste. That I know has a scrubbie in it.
Duane,
We use to make some similar Hoosier type cabs. Not production, maybe 10 at a time. Some were all solid rift sawn red oak, but most were solids with 3/4" plain sliced red oak plywood. All the tops were 5/4. We finished them on all 4 sides. Some were hand rubbed. We also sprayed a wash coat, then sprayed NGR stain cut with acetone and rubbed out. Next we shot them with satin pre-cat lacquer.
Our standard unit had a drawer.

Very nice. I've been kicking around a few project designs, but in no way would I try to expect a lot of sales, I already had that dream.
Stuff for fun is where I am..if it pays, so much the better, I still need to be out on site to make a decent buck.
The last serious furniture contact just wasted my time, she wanted this, and that and one of these...then went to an antique place, and bought a pile of junk, and wanted me to repair it all. She also had some "Other" designs, not about furniture..LOL
We'll see what develops..I am anxious to do something.

SHE had some nice melons, I remember that.

John,
Thanx for the kind words. Had one decorator that sold the crap out of those in the early '80s.
Going back to about 4 posts or so, I had a similar experience with another decorator. She said she had a loose screw in the bedroom. I tightened it. (I was single then and in a major PIF)
That hardware is replica ice box hardware. I used the solid brass, not plate. Reasonably priced if you buy 100, but not bad by the twos and fews.

"I said, "Hello, could I speak to Joey?"... "
They said, "Uh... I don't think so... he's only 2 months old."
"I said, "I'll hold."
Duane, remember, I love ya -
but I don't like what you did with the commodes - ya took all the crispness away - made 'em look like skinned antiques - edges rounded over -
yer arrises are all over the place <g>
and I don't like your hinges much either....
but that's just me - you know your market -
do ya still love me?
see ya -
D
"there's enough for everyone"
Well yeah, I still luv ya.
My bad, I HAD planned on "H" hinges and inset doors. never found any local that I liked..I had these crappy Amerock inset laying around and flew with them..ces't la vie.
I never seem to actually order the hardware I want ahead of time, and wind up with a substitute. You'd think I'd learn.
Point taken on my arrissises LOL...I have seen what vacuume cleaner wands and cords do to sharp base aprons, I'll work on less whacking away.
these are display only, anyway, they'll be back home after a few weeks in the gallery...see if I get any nibbles.

Finish looks really good.
But I'm going to have to agree with Doud on those hinges. They look like the hinges you'd find on a $50 particleboard nightstand, not a hand crafted piece. They don't do your work justice. See if Rez doesn't have a couple thousand hinges stored away somewhere. Put different hinges on there and double your asking price.
Gooood Lord, this is the man who made a cowboy hat out of COPPER! To tell ya the truth, I was kinda surprised that a person of your varied interests/experiences didn't MAKE the hinges! Figured you'd have a forge made out of an old wheelbarrow or such. Or some other way of hand crafting hinges & knobs.

hey Duane -
thanks for the shout-out - I'm happy that good things are coming out of the tree - a handsome, pleasingly proportioned piece - is it a copy of something old? or just 'new england style'? (I'm thinking shakers didn't do shell carving...and us rustics don't either...)
Val says hi, and good luck at the gallery - T likes it too "neat" - -
personally, I'm impressed with your hand planing - I'd guessed there to be a lot of 'reversing' grain to try to deal with - love a floor covered in hand plane shavings - -
I've got a project nearing completion that I'm going to post in the gallery soon - that endless window project - I finished trimming the room today - got a fair amount of work to do on the outside now, but at least I've got what I'm doing figured out - spent a lot more time scratching my head than making shavings on this project -
anyway - carry on the good work -
regards - D
Hey buddy,
Yeah, a copy of a copy of a copy I'd venture to say. The comany I was working for muddled the designs up out of a few influences. definitly not shaker with that shell. I don't remember if that commode even had the shell on the apron, when we produced them, but I did all my furniture that had aprons with it. Lamp tables had 4 each, hutch had 3, and coffee table 2. They are fun.
The wood was switchbacked, but all except the aprons and raised panel are pretty much quarter or rift sawn...man that guy at the saw knew his stuff! I was praising you as I planed. Now don't get me wrong, it went thru the planer first, I just hand plane to impart the tactile nuance of a convex iron's tracks in the final stages. Start with a #3 as a scrub, then smooth with #4 or #5. Varying the iron's curve and bite.
I'll be displaying these two, and re-creating any potential orders, I want to keep the Ash ones for MY house, cuz so far that is still what I intend to trim out with, as I get around to it.
I'd love to see the room ya got going on there...man, I really need to take a drive up soon.
Thanks David...happy orcharding! Give Val &T a hug for me.
Looks good, but I wanna see it after you've got the finish on there. I'm good at messing up the finish.
You gonna start hanging out with those Knots snobs now?
