Whaz shakin’ brother? Was thinking of you today.
I was sorta rained out from a siding job I’m doing on a new design I’m applying to the front of a house…part of it is the peak of a gable where I’m building my own gable vent as part of the design. Store bought ones are just…well.,..mehh..ya know? so….anyway..I was up on my scaffolds.. out in the rain…getting a few numbers to build the template first. The angle I needed was 60* and my good ol’ 12″DWSCMS only goes up to 55*. Being it’s not furnature I’m building I just put a thin stick of scrap against the fence to give me that lil’ bit extra…but I hated doing that and got to thinking….when’s this whinning chopper gonna die already? Sounded like it was gonna die a year ago but it just keeps on goin’….
I got tho thinking about you’n yer Kapex and wondered…being it’s been a spell…how do you still like it? I don’t hear people talking about them all that much anymore.

you long lost semi unusual dude, you!
It has been a while. Katrina and the rest of the family doing well? New abode feeling lived in? We're grandparents X 2 now.
Back to the question at hand.
I still think it was a great investment, but then again-with a tag like that, kinda makes you think a little better of it just because.
point being, you ever hear and owner of a cadillac complain?
The cuts are dead on-the laser the same. I'm loving that part a bunch.
It's not light, but it's nowhere near what might have been my second choice.........bosch's new one-the 12.
There's this dado function on the Kapex. I've used it now a few times-much more than on my other scms's.
You can get to it easy, flip-couple turns to set depth of cut and you've got it on fixed travel.
Ok, done dado'ing-flip that flipper again, it's back to regular depth.
Oh fuck, I need to dado just one more time-the same depth..............................
Flip and it's back to what you had set up b/4.
Remember the double nut adjustment on those other saws, you had to dial it all the way back when you were done and then all the way back if you forgot one dado................at least that is what I was used to-or do it free hand.
So yessir-I still think it was what I wanted and should have got and it's making me money, saving me time and saving my back.
Cripes, if it took me out for a cold one and a ball game-it'd be just about perfect.
thanks and good luck on your decision. To each his own.
yeh..new abode..well..it's been over a year here now and it feels very lived in being my tools are in just about every single room of the house wall to wall cept the rooms that are fini'. Last room I finished were the kitchen/dining rooms....all on a shoe-string budget hence lots'n lots of Craig's List merch...new and used. GREAT deals!! https://picasaweb.google.com/115904937785850293189/KitchenBlairDrJuly2011?authkey=Gv1sRgCLjEw8zSuOC6bQ#slideshow/5630755116091691634
oh geez...I forgot about my links not working here..I dunno..maybe it will, maybe it won't. You can always Copy and paste I reckon.
Soon as I'm done here it'll go on the market...another year and a half +-? Something like that.
Katrina's good...she captains a tennis team now and they just won all of Long Island and went up to Schenectady to play in thre sectionals this past week..the entire east coast winners...and they won. Now they're off to California for the nationals...so she's as happy as can be. Me? Same shid new day...work work work .
I'm not about to buy a new saw yet while mine is still crankin' but I do think about yours : )~
At this age I think we have all the tools we need....well..not all but most. I never seem to lack the need of one...not usually.
After I scored the Fein MM a few monts back I started wondering why I bought it being I never used it...untill I used it...lol...now I never stop using it. Blades from Sears seem to be the best deal. Packs of 2 and 3 for $12 a pack...mainly the typical wood cutter blades.
Scored a new 4 1/2" DW grinder when I was doing the kitchen thinking I was gonna cut my own tumbled marble outlet covers. My 7" grinder was way too big. Turned out that I had way too many to do to make it worth my while. You know how we get. If this house was a keeper I'd had done it but....real nice grinder though..on sale for $75 with a hard case.
What else? I dunno...same crap. Oh yeh...I'm a Granpapy too but I think you already knew that. Congrads on your 2nd Pappy!!
I stop by here occasionally but never post...you know how it is. Actually I never go to any forums anymore...just a little FB to kill time. Netflix streaming takes up my evenings. 224 episodes of Have Gun Will Travel...lol...Watched em' all. I never realized how incredably good that show really was. Way ahead of it's time! Now I'm onto Gunsmoke episodes..Matt Dillion ain't as good as Paladin..but not bad...lol.
Say hi to Joyce for me brother...
Thank you Andrew`
Off to the couch................or might go visit your place.
Best of luck to the Tennis Players!
Following up on Calvin's Glowing Review...
Hey Andy,
Yes, it's a really nice saw. One thing that tipped me over the edge was that it's quiet, or at least a lot quieter than the Ridgid I was using. Like Calvin said, the lasers are dandy, the dado function is great and the cuts were joyous to behold. Sure you get a new saw with a new blade and you expect miracles, but these were just sweet.
Only complaints I have... while the included clamp works really well, if you pivot the table and forget to move the clamp first you'll grouse when you realize that the clamp is now locked on the side you don't want to be using it on. You've got to swing the table again, pull the clamp, move it to the other side, swing the table, etc. My advice, get a second clamp. You might also look at those new Bessey adjustable ones: http://www.thisiscarpentry.com/2011/09/13/bessey-toggle-clamps/
You'll also find spots on the right side where the motor bumps into where you've got the clamp positioned.
Make a sub-fence that's zero-clearance, or close to it. This saw will tend to pick up small cut-offs and fling them. Got one stuck in the blade guard once.
That's it. Looking back I wish I would have gotten it before I did.
Now if only I could find a set of Sawhelper wings I'd be set.
Best,
Steve
